The Eaton County Courthouse Museum stands as a cherished landmark in the heart of Eaton County, Michigan. More than an architectural marvel, the museum plays a vital role in enriching the community by preserving local heritage, providing educational opportunities, and serving as a hub for many community events. These events include Frontier Days, Charlotte Celebrates, Charloween and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

“The Courthouse Square Museum anchors Eaton County’s identity by honoring the resilience and creativity of its people and ensuring that the stories of Eaton County aren’t lost to time but remain alive for future generations,” said Deb Malewski, a Courthouse Square Association (CSA) board member. “It also has become a major gathering place for festivals, historical activities, and volunteer programs that bring people together.”

The Eaton County Courthouse Museum is dedicated to safeguarding the history of Eaton County. By maintaining and displaying historical artifacts, documents, and photographs, the museum offers residents and visitors alike an opportunity to connect with the area’s past. This preservation fosters a sense of identity and pride among community members, ensuring that the county’s unique stories and traditions are passed down through generations.

The museum serves as an invaluable educational resource for schools, families, and lifelong learners. Guided tours, interactive exhibits, and special programs introduce visitors to local history, government, and architecture. These experiences are designed to engage all ages, making history accessible and relevant. Students can benefit from hands-on learning and exposure to primary sources, which enhances their understanding of the region.

The courthouse building itself is a testament to the county’s architectural heritage. Its preservation and adaptive reuse as a museum allows residents and visitors to appreciate historic craftsmanship and design. The museum’s presence enhances the cultural landscape of Eaton County, making it a destination for those interested in history, architecture, and community life. This year we started our elevator project. When complete in early 2026, visitors who cannot use the stairs will be able to visit all three levels of the building. A huge project like this is only possible by donations and grants. We are still accepting donations to complete the elevator project. Please visit our website to donate: csamuseum.net.

By attracting visitors from neighboring regions and beyond, the Eaton County Courthouse Museum contributes to the local economy. Tourists often explore surrounding shops, restaurants, and attractions, providing a boost to local businesses. The museum’s reputation as a historical landmark increases Eaton County’s visibility as a travel destination.

The Eaton County Courthouse Museum is much more than a repository of artifacts; it is a vibrant center for history, education, and community engagement. Its ongoing commitment to preserving local heritage and fostering civic pride makes it an indispensable asset to the people of Eaton County. As the museum continues to evolve, its positive impact on the community will only grow, ensuring that future generations benefit from its presence.

“The 1885 Eaton County Courthouse continues to be the most iconic building in Eaton County. The CSA is proud to be the custodian of the building and Courthouse Square,” said Rod Weaver, CSA Board President. “Over the years, the “Square” has been an important venue for community activities and celebrations such as to honor Vietnam Veterans, Charlotte Celebrates, Frontier Days, Festival of Oddities, Halloween and Christmas. And lastly, the Courthouse Square Museum celebrates mid-Michigan history.” We hope to see you soon for a tour!

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, Darrell’s Market & Hardware marked a spectacular milestone: its 80th Anniversary Celebration. More than just a local store, Darrell’s has been a constant, beating heart in Aurelius Township, near Mason, MI, evolving through eight decades and four generations.

THE CORNERSTONE: A $7,500 DREAM

The story of Darrell’s Market began as World War II ended and the “Golden Age” of independent grocers was dawning. In 1945, Darrell Gavin, a seasoned grocery store manager, and his wife Lyla, purchased a property at the corner of Aurelius and Columbia Roads. For the bargain price of $7,500, they acquired a grocery store, a gas station, an acre of land, and a three-bedroom house — a true all-in-one homestead.

Darrell and Lyla settled in, raising their family, including step-son Jim Blauvelt and younger children Bill and Eileen, in the house attached to the business. This commitment, living where they worked, established a legacy of personal investment that would define the market for generations.

THE SECOND GENERATION’S CALL

Tragedy struck in 1957 when Darrell unexpectedly passed away after a stroke. The future of the small market rested on the shoulders of second-generation Jim Blauvelt. Jim returned home from college and a spot on the MSC (later known as Michigan State University) football team, married his high school sweetheart Pat Holtz, and dedicated himself to the family business and supporting his mother and siblings.

Under Jim and Pat’s leadership, the market grew and adapted. In the face of competition from large chains like Kroger and Meijer, they took a leap of faith. They joined the “Thriftway Super Markets” alliance in 1961 for buying power and, in 1975, moved across the street to a large “New Store” built on land they had purchased in 1963. They later became independent and successfully combined groceries and a hardware store in one location — a service mix that proved invaluable.

GENERATIONS OF DEDICATION

Terry Blauvelt (son) and Jamie Robinson (daughter), the third generation, were working full-time in the stores, raising their families in Mason and learning the trade when the community’s deep bond with the store was dramatically tested in 1992. A major fire, starting in the middle of the night, devastated the building. The impact was heartbreaking, but the response was immediate and overwhelming. Neighbors, customers, and employees showed up in force, volunteering countless hours to help the family clean up and re-open.

It wasn’t just a business that burned; it was a fixture in the community, and the outpouring of support cemented the store’s place as a true pillar of Mason. After the fire, Jamie, along with her husband Scott, stepped into ownership in the mid-1990s, carrying forward the tradition of service and resilience.

THE LEGACY CONTINUES

The next chapter began in 2020 when Jared Browers, Scott and Jamie’s son, took over day-to-day operations, ensuring the market’s survival through the challenging pandemic era with the help of many dedicated, long-term staff members. Today, as a fourth-generation-run independent store, Darrell’s remains a living testament to the grit and community focus that started with a $7,500 purchase 80 years ago.

Looking ahead, Jared is focused on honoring the store’s heritage while positioning it for the future. He plans to create more community-centered events, many of them built around the growing presence of Nuts & Bolts Café inside the hardware store. From casual gatherings to seasonal celebrations, he sees the café as a natural hub for bringing neighbors together.

A GRAND REUNION

The 80th Anniversary Celebration on September 27, 2025 was the ultimate employee and community party. Many of those who had walked through the doors, worked behind the counter, or supported Darrell’s over the past eight decades joined in the festivities.

The night started with an employee reunion where past and present employees came together to share memories and catch up with old friends. Attendees were treated to a custom made ‘80’ cake by local anchorman David Andrews and a special “sweethearts” photo station that honored all of the couples who meet their spouses among the aisles. The Mason Chamber of Commerce also held a ribbon cutting to honor Darrell’s as a founding chamber member along with their 80 years in business.

Throughout the evening, the ‘Decades of Customers and Their Rides’ car exhibit delighted guests with decade specific modes of transportation, from 1940 to 2026, on display by actual Darrell’s customers. The Sea Cruisers band, a local (and Darrell’s) favorite, played music from the store’s first 40 years. Guests boogied to music from the 50s to the 70s, filling the dance floor in front of the band and making every toe tap. Another local band, The Pocket, covered classic rock from the 60s to the 2000s, bringing the party into the 21st century and closing out the night.

While they danced and partied, guests were able to grab dinner or a snack from Holt based food truck, Two Guys Nomadic Grill, and a complimentary ice cream treat from Darrell’s freezer. The newest addition to Darrell’s, Nuts & Bolts Cafe, located inside the hardware store, provided guests with beer, wine, cocktails, and specialty coffee drinks throughout the night.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

The partnership with local businesses and groups has been a founding principal of Darrell’s since the beginning and was again put into practice for the 80th anniversary party. The following individuals and businesses helped make this event a success:

Benjamin Schartow

David Andrews

Delux Tents Mid Michigan

Lollybean

Mason Area Chamber of Commerce

North Aurelius Elementary School

SDVisuals

Sea Cruisers

Shaheen Cadillac

Sohn Linen

Supreme Sanitation

The Pocket

Two Guys Nomadic Grill

The incredible and talented staff of Darrell’s Market & Hardware

Eighty years after Darrell and Lyla first opened their doors, the market that began as a modest homestead stands as one of Mason’s most enduring local treasures. Its story is woven from hard work, family commitment, and a community that has shown up time and again.

As Darrell’s Market & Hardware steps into its next chapter, the spirit that carried it through fires, expansions, and changing times remains the same: a promise to serve, support, and stay rooted in the place it calls home. Here’s to the generations who built it, the neighbors who believe in it, and all the memories still to come.

Growing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

How FFA Shapes Students in Mason and Dansville

The blue corduroy jacket has become a familiar sight in classrooms, barns, and auditoriums across the country, and here in Mid-Michigan it represents far more than an agriculture club. For students, FFA becomes a place to discover their strengths, practice teamwork, develop communication skills, and feel connected to a supportive community. Here in Ingham County, Mason and Dansville have two vibrant chapters that show exactly how meaningful that experience can be.

A NATIONAL MISSION WITH LOCAL HEART

The National FFA Organization, once known as the Future Farmers of America, officially updated its name in 1988 to reflect its wider focus on science, business, technology, natural resources, and leadership. The letters FFA remain as a nod to the organization’s heritage, but today its broader mission is preparing students for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success.

At the national level, FFA aims to “make a positive difference in the lives of students” by helping them build leadership skills, confidence, and real-world experience. That mission comes to life through classroom learning, career exploration, leadership training, and active involvement in local chapters.

MASON FFA: LEADERSHIP, PERSONAL GROWTH, AND COMMUNITY

At Mason High School, students not only join FFA to learn about agriculture, but they also find a place where they can lead, build friendships, and uncover new strengths. Members take part in leadership contests, chapter meetings, fundraisers, the co-op plant sale, and various community activities that help shape them into capable young leaders.

“The Mason FFA organization offers a variety of opportunities and services that not only offer premiere leadership development, but encourage it,” said Alex Cargill, Mason FFA student and the chapter’s Vice President.

Mason FFA students also learn through personal experiences working as a team, taking responsibility for projects, and discovering their own abilities along the way. The chapter places a strong emphasis on real-world learning.

“Every activity in Mason FFA encourages students to grow into responsible, passionate young leaders who are ready to make a difference,” said Matthew Albrecht, Mason FFA Advisor and Agriscience teacher.

Classes in Zoology, Botany, and Agricultural Leadership provide a foundation in both agriculture and career skills, while the co-op program, plant sale, and leadership conferences give students meaningful opportunities to apply what they’ve learned. But for many members, the greatest impact comes from the relationships they build.

“Success in FFA isn’t just about winning trophies, it’s about the relationships you make,” said Emma Whipple, Mason FFA student and the chapter’s Reporter. “Truly winning is walking into the room during a chapter meeting and seeing a bunch of smiling faces ready to greet you. If you ever think about joining FFA, do it! You not only gain life skills but also friends that will last a lifetime.”

DANSVILLE FFA: HANDS-ON LEARNING AND AGRICULTURAL EXPLORATION

The Dansville FFA Chapter blends leadership development with an impressive range of hands-on agricultural experiences. In Zoology and Botany classes, students learn by producing apple cider, raising broiler chickens for competition, tending plants in potting sheds and hydroponic systems, farrowing sows, and collecting sap to make maple syrup. These experiences give students a real understanding of the agricultural industry, whether they come from farming families or have never set foot on a farm.

“Dansville is the perfect place to find talented young people who will be the future leaders of the agricultural industry,” said Mike Sheridan, Dansville FFA Advisor and Agriscience teacher. “Whether students grow up on a farm or not, here in Dansville, they understand the importance of agriculture.

Outside of class, the chapter’s activities give students even more space to learn and lead. They participate in Ag Olympics, travel to Indianapolis for the National FFA Convention, compete in leadership development events like public speaking and conduct of meetings, and take part in career development events such as floriculture and livestock judging. They also attend the Michigan FFA State Convention on the campus of Michigan State University, which is a highlight for many students. Dansville’s officer team plays an important role in guiding the chapter, and each officer carries real responsibilities.

“What I get out of being part of FFA is the opportunity to learn as not only a leader but as a member of our community,” said Philomena Mayr, Dansville FFA student and the chapter ‘s President. “FFA teaches you a lot of skills that we can apply to everyday life. I have made new friends and met all kinds of amazing people through the FFA.”

WHERE GROWTH TAKES ROOT

Though FFA operates on a national scale, its deepest influence happens in local chapters like Mason and Dansville where students discover their voice, find mentors, and gain confidence through hands-on learning. Whether students are building leadership skills in Mason or gaining real-world experience in Dansville, both chapters show how FFA creates opportunities for young people to grow, explore their interests, and prepare for life beyond high school.

Across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, deer numbers are widely acknowledged to be too high. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) estimates the statewide deer population at roughly two million animals. While recent county-level figures are no longer published, the southern Lower Peninsula, including Eaton County, remains one of the most densely populated regions for deer in the state.

Several factors have contributed to this growth. Milder winters mean fewer losses to harsh weather. Suburban expansion has created edge habitat with plenty of food and cover. Predator numbers are low in most regions. But, perhaps the most significant factor is that the number of active hunters continues to decline, weakening one of the key management tools used to keep the herd in check.

WHY IT MATTERS

An overabundance of deer can have wide-ranging consequences for both people and the environment. On the ecological side, too many deer can damage forest understories and young tree growth, making it harder for native plants to regenerate. In agricultural areas, high deer populations can cause costly crop damage, destroy fences, and create daily frustrations for farmers and landowners.

The issue also extends to roadways. Michigan consistently ranks among the top states for deer-vehicle collisions, with more than 58,000 reported crashes in 2023 alone. Those accidents resulted in 1,725 injuries and 19 deaths. The cost of vehicle repairs, insurance claims, and hospital bills quickly adds up creating a burden that extends far beyond the rural landscape.

Declining hunter participation adds another layer to the challenge. In the early 2000s, Michigan had more than 800,000 deer hunters. Today, that number is closer to 525,000. Fewer hunters mean fewer deer harvested each year. Without that population control, herds can quickly outgrow available habitat, which increases impacts on both people and the environment.

DISEASE CONCERNS IN A CROWDED HERD

As deer numbers climb, so does the risk of disease. Overpopulation leads to closer contact among animals, making it easier for illnesses to spread. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) has caused periodic die-offs in parts of Michigan, especially during warm, dry summers when biting midges are active, and chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected in Eaton County.

While these diseases don’t pose a direct threat to humans, they highlight the importance of active herd management. Active management and testing help slow the spread and keep local herds healthier over time.

HOW THE RULES ARE CHANGING

Recognizing these pressures, the DNR has made several adjustments to its deer management strategy. Hunters are being encouraged to harvest more antlerless deer to help bring herd numbers back into balance. Landowners who experience damage to crops or landscaping can apply for special Deer Damage Shooting Permits to remove deer outside of regular hunting seasons.

For the 2025-2026 season, now underway, the DNR extended opportunities to hunt. Adjustments include expanded late antlerless firearm seasons, additional archery opportunities, and more flexibility during the muzzleloader season in certain areas. These changes are designed to give hunters more chances to participate while helping reduce the statewide deer population to healthier levels.

Mandatory harvest reporting, which requires hunters to log their deer within 72 hours of harvest, remains in place. The data collected from those reports will help the DNR better understand regional herd trends and measure the success of management efforts in real time.

ENCOURAGING THE NEXT GENERATION OF HUNTERS

Michigan’s deer herd has grown beyond what current hunter participation can manage. Hunting remains the most effective way to reduce deer numbers while supporting conservation through license revenue. Encouraging more people to participate, especially youth and those returning to the sport, is essential. Local clubs, landowners, and outdoor organizations can help by offering mentorship, access, and education that make hunting more approachable. Every successful harvest plays a part in reducing crop damage, curbing collisions, and restoring healthier habitat.

LOOKING AHEAD

Eaton County illustrates the larger story across Michigan: rising deer numbers, changing regulations, and growing concern about safety and land use. The new rules are an important step, but lasting progress will take participation from every corner of the community. Hunters, farmers, residents, and local officials all have a stake in managing an overpopulated herd. The challenge is not simply about reducing numbers but maintaining balance for healthy deer, safer roads, productive farms, and active hunting seasons.

New investments in health care are reshaping the region west of Lansing. With McLaren Greater Lansing’s new medical campus opening in phases in Delta Township and UM Health–Sparrow’s project underway in Oneida Township, Grand Ledge is emerging as a growing hub for modern, accessible care. By investing millions in the area’s medical capacity, these projects are at once large capital investments and community infrastructure upgrades.

“We’re very pleased that UM Health–Sparrow chose Oneida Township for their new mini hospital and we’ve appreciated how well their team has worked with us through our local zoning and permitting process,” said Rick Jones, Oneida Township Supervisor. “Having both UM Health–Sparrow and McLaren expanding medical services in the Grand Ledge area is a real benefit for residents.”

Both projects aim to make essential services easier to reach for area residents. For families in Grand Ledge, that means shorter drives for appointments, expanded options for urgent and emergency treatment, and new opportunities to stay within the community for specialized care.

MEETING THE NEEDS OF A CHANGING COMMUNITY

While the area has seen some moderate growth, especially in Delta Township, the need for more accessible care in the Grand Ledge area isn’t driven by population spikes, but by practical realities. An aging population, increased demand for chronic-disease management, and the everyday challenges of traveling for appointments have all made local access a growing priority.

Families want care that fits into their schedules, without having to travel long distances. Older adults want fewer barriers between them and their doctors. And providers recognize that offering those services close to home improves both patient satisfaction and better health outcomes.

WHY CLOSER CARE MEANS BETTER HEALTH

When health care fits into daily life, rather than being a logistical challenge, people are more likely to get it. Studies have shown that when patients have to drive long distances for appointments, they’re more likely to delay or skip preventive care, lab work, or follow-ups. Over time, those missed visits can mean conditions go undiagnosed or unmanaged until they become serious.

For residents of Grand Ledge, having full-service facilities just minutes away removes that barrier. Bloodwork can be done on a lunch break instead of taking a day off. Follow-up visits after surgery or illness are easier to keep. Parents can schedule a same-day urgent care appointment for a child without rearranging an entire day of work.

Local access also improves continuity of care, allowing patients to see familiar providers regularly while ensuring that primary doctors, specialists, and clinics can coordinate seamlessly. When the same clinic handles your annual physical, lab tests, and referrals to specialists, information flows more smoothly and treatment decisions are better coordinated. More consistency helps prevent medication errors, duplicated tests, and gaps in follow-up care.

In emergencies, shorter travel times can make an even bigger difference. Quick access to an emergency department reduces the time between symptom onset and treatment, especially for heart attacks, strokes, and injuries where every minute counts. McLaren’s new freestanding ER will cut that travel time dramatically for residents in Grand Ledge and surrounding areas.

Ultimately, these new facilities make it possible for more people to stay proactive about their health and get faster care when urgently needed. Together, that leads to earlier diagnoses, fewer complications, and a stronger, healthier community.

McLAREN GRAND LEDGE

The path to better access has already started to unfold as McLaren Grand Ledge became the earliest of the two projects to open its new medical campus on Saginaw Highway, just west of Nixon Road. The facility began a phased opening on October 6 with primary care, cardiology, general surgery, and a lab draw station for quick, convenient testing.

Then, on October 20, a landmark moment for the community arrived when McLaren opened a 24-hour freestanding emergency department, the closest round-the-clock emergency care available to Grand Ledge residents. Looking ahead, McLaren plans to expand services to include oncology through the Karmanos Cancer Network, allowing patients to receive cancer treatment and follow-up care closer to home.

“Our selection of the Delta Township location was fundamentally driven by the area’s growth and the clear need for more accessible, comprehensive health services for the Delta Township/Grand Ledge community,” said Austin Holcomb, Director of Corporate Construction Management. “We have maintained close collaboration with Delta Township officials throughout the planning and development process to ensure this facility aligns with the community’s future. Ultimately, the McLaren free-standing ER and medical services building improves healthcare outcomes by dramatically reducing travel times for emergency services, ensuring timely and convenient access to care when it is needed most.”

UM HEALTH–SPARROW

Just a few miles away in Oneida Township, construction is underway on UM Health–Sparrow’s new health center also along Saginaw Highway, west of Sundance Chevrolet. Scheduled to open in 2027, the project will bring together primary and urgent care, imaging, lab work, and pharmacy services in one location, creating a setup designed for convenience and efficiency.

Beyond its advanced medical services the project is also innovative in its sustainable approach to construction. It’s being built to meet LEED certification standards, which means using energy-efficient systems, sustainable materials, and natural light to reduce environmental impact and create a healthier setting for patients and staff alike.

“This new facility is a direct response to the growing needs of this community. The site in Oneida Township will offer a wide range of comprehensive services, including urgent care, laboratory, retail pharmacy, primary care, specialty care, outpatient rehab and advanced imaging and cardiology services,” said Connie O’Malley, regional chief operating officer, University of Michigan Health. “By centralizing these essential services in a modern, accessible location, we are removing barriers and ensuring that highquality health care is a convenient reality for families in and around Grand Ledge. This project is a cornerstone of our commitment to building a statewide network of care.”

BUILDING A STRONGER LOCAL ECONOMY

Beyond improving access to care, these projects are shaping the community’s economic future. The new medical campuses are bringing hundreds of jobs in health care, administration, and support services. These positions attract professionals and families who want to live close to where they work.

Modern health facilities also make Grand Ledge more appealing to new residents and employers who view access to quality care as part of a community’s overall quality of life. These investments strengthen the local tax base, support small businesses, and send a clear message that Grand Ledge is a place with long-term stability and opportunity.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome McLaren Greater Lansing’s new Ambulatory and Emergency Care Facility to our community,” said Fonda J. Brewer, Delta Township Supervisor. “This facility has brought safe, timely, and important emergency services, as well as preventive medical care, right to our own backyard. The ambulatory service is already assisting our own Fire Department by significantly decreasing the number of runs into Lansing, allowing our team to decrease response times and lessen the amount of time it takes for each ambulance to return to service. At a time when many families are navigating barriers to quality care, McLaren’s investment brings trusted healthcare closer to home and strengthens our community’s well-being.”

A FULL RANGE OF LOCAL SERVICES

Together, McLaren Greater Lansing and UM Health–Sparrow represent a shift in how health care is delivered. Rather than asking residents to travel into Lansing for routine visits or follow-up tests, they are bringing care directly into the community. With specialists, urgent care, and emergency services all nearby, these projects close a long-standing gap in local access and make it easier for residents to manage their health without added travel or time away from work and family.

In the process, they’re creating more than medical buildings; they’re creating lasting infrastructure for a healthier, more resilient community. Their combined investments help to ensure that Grand Ledge is a place where people can live well, work confidently, and feel safe, knowing essential services are available and closer than ever before.

For the first time since 2019, Airstreams rolled into Eaton Rapids on October 2nd with the return of Urban Air®, bringing with it a gleaming parade of aluminum trailers, nostalgic charm, and community pride. The weekend that followed seemed like a dynamic summer festival with unseasonably warm weather and an abundance of events including live music, an art fair, a quilt show, a community market, the “Pimp Your Blimp” contest, scavenger hunts, an Island City Wine Walk, Autumn on the Island activities, the Grand River Color Tour Triathlon, and even more attractions that coincided with the “Wake Up Downtown” event.

A WARM WELCOME BACK

The City of Eaton Rapid and Eaton Rapids DDA, along with many volunteers and area businesses, hosted and organized the event. The theme for 2025, “Back to the Future,” celebrated the 40 year anniversary of the 80s classic and suited the 101 airstreamers perfectly. Rows of mirror-bright trailers, many decorated to tie-in with the time-travelling theme, stretched down Main Street with their futuristic curved shells reflecting the vintage brick buildings.

Owners came from across Michigan and as far away as Florida, Texas, and Ontario. Some had attended Urban Air years ago and couldn’t wait to return. Others had heard about the event through Airstream Club International and wanted to experience the renowned small-town hospitality firsthand.

Main Street transformed into a neighborhood and extended hospitality. Airstream owners set up lawn chairs and awnings, swapping stories with passersby. Local residents mingled freely, welcomed into the “silver city” that had sprung up overnight. With expanded hours, shops offered Airstream-themed specials and restaurants rolled out seasonal menus. Food trucks filled the side streets, there was a community breakfast at the First Congregational Church, and the Rotary served a Chicago-style Italian Beef dinner.

Live music carried through downtown each night. On Main Street, several street artists played and the entertainment and beer tent on Hall Street featured a variety of mid-Michigan performers. Thursday night opened with Twilight Memories Big Band, an 18 piece orchestra celebrating its 25th year of performing. Rod Villarreal and Universe Band brought their unique sounds to the stage Friday night. The four Saturday night acts included Eaton Rapids own Thick ‘N Thin, country artist Justin Judge, alternative and classic rock band BlueSkye, and the Kevin Wolff Band from Concord, Michigan.

“We are excited that Urban Air made a return to Eaton Rapids after a 6-year hiatus. When Covid hit in 2020, we knew we couldn’t have the event and it was a good time to put it on hold since the last few years had been lower in camper turnout,” said Pamela Colestock, Mayor for the City of Eaton Rapids. “It wasn’t until last year when the Urban Air organizer, Kirk McKellar, asked us if we were ready to give it another try, and we were happy to say yes. It was also time for us to make this a community event with a lot of fun activities, so it wasn’t just about the campers, but more of a fall festival that featured the airstream campers.”

THE SPIRIT OF URBAN AIR

Airstreamers are a unique community — part hobbyists, part historians, and part wanderers. Trailer doors often sport decades’ worth of destination stickers. Some rigs display badges from every state they’ve visited, while others feature custom emblems marking rallies and caravans they’ve attended every year. Many have lovingly restored their trailers from the 1950s and ’60s, preserving original cabinetry, upholstery, and appliances. Others are modernized with solar panels, Wi-Fi, and sleek interiors, blending mid-century design and 21st-century comfort.

Urban Air offers them something rare: a chance to park those stories side by side. Each day you could hear laughter between neighboring campers and the rhythmic hum of conversation echoing off the aluminum shells. Many trailers host open houses, allowing visitors to walk through their vintage to modern models.

THE GRAND RIVER COLOR TOUR TRIATHLON

Saturday morning, the focus shifted from polished aluminum to paddles and pedals as the 5th Annual Grand River Color Tour Triathlon set off along the riverbank. Athletes launched their kayaks into the Grand for a 2K paddle, transitioned to a 15-mile bike ride, and ended with a 5K run, crossing the finish line in a cloud of brilliant color.

The unique triathlon drew seasoned competitors. Other participants chose to only run in the 5k or to complete the triathlon as a relay team of three. Many Airstreamers lined the race course to cheer on the athletes and in the final leg
runners dashed through bursts of powder and applause.

AUTUMN ON THE ISLAND

Vibrant color powder could still be seen on the footbridge at G.A.R. Island Park, as Autumn on the Island commenced, bringing its own family-friendly counterpoint to all the excitement downtown. From 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, families strolled between shops downtown and activity stations beneath the park’s trees. The Eaton Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce sold punch cards for $20 that included all the fun fall activities such as painting pumpkins, cooking s’mores over a campfire, and decorating witch hats. Kids enjoyed getting their faces painted while snacking at the caramel apple bar and cookie crawl.

“Autumn on the Island offers a fun, family-friendly way to celebrate the season with a variety of fall-themed activities throughout downtown Eaton Rapids,” said Bryonna Barton, Director of the Eaton Rapids Area District Library. “The event highlights community spirit, with local businesses joining in by offering special treats, featured drinks, and interactive stations that make the afternoon both festive and memorable. It’s a great example of how Eaton Rapids comes together to create something special for families and visitors alike.”

SCAVENGER HUNTS, CONTESTS & MORE

The PIMP YOUR BLIMP™ contest — an Urban Air staple — brought laughter and creativity to another level while benefiting a local charity. Airstreamers decked out their trailers in theme-focused decor. Many wore costumes from Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown to supporting characters like Lorraine Baines McFly and Principal Strickland.

Airstreamers Gary Flint and Tom Diamond hosted the prom scene Under the Sea, complete with a bubble maker and period music parked in front of City Hall close to Urban Air Square and the Delorean. They also participated in Saturday’s scavenger hunt, with a giant match stick at their rig being an item participants needed to find.

“Our Airstream is a 2018 Globetrotter and was my retirement gift. We came from Columbus Ohio for this event and have traveled as far as Rock Springs Wyoming in our trailer,” said Flint as he showed off destination stickers affixed to their open door.

With so much happening over the long weekend, it was impossible to catch it all — but there truly was something for everyone. Highlights included a Bluey party and story time, art and quilt shows, a community photo contest, a historic walking tour, a free fall and winter clothing giveaway, a ukulele festival, a community market, and a kids’ zone.

Several local landmarks joined in the fun, opening their doors for visitors and special activities, including the G.A.R. Museum, Eaton Outdoor Recreation Center, Eaton Rapids Senior Center, and Miller Farm. Together, they added depth and discovery to a weekend already overflowing with creativity and connection.

A TOAST TO DOWNTOWN

Another standout of the weekend was the Island City Wine Walk, which began Friday at 5:00 p.m. Downtown shops and restaurants welcomed guests to enjoy six wine tastings across eight locations, each thoughtfully paired with a small bite. Stops along the route included Ackley-Peters-Haubert Insurance, Craft Co., Darb’s Patio, Fosters Coffee, the G.A.R. Museum, Las Flores, Mooville, and Rooted Salon. The stroll offered the perfect blend of flavor and fun, encouraging visitors to explore, mingle, and savor the evening while getting to know each local business.

ECONOMIC SPARK & SHARED EFFORT

Between airstreamers and an influx of spectators, families, and athletes, Eaton Rapids saw one of its busiest weekends on record. It took the combined effort of the Eaton Rapids DDA, Chamber of Commerce, city staff, and local sponsors to bring all these events together for one cohesive weekend.

“Urban Air was truly a community-wide effort. The original planning committee included more than 20 community volunteers who spent over a year, meeting monthly, to organize every detail — from evening entertainment and daily activities to sponsorship, marketing, and the Urban Air Art Fair,” said Corey Cagle, Director of Parks, Recreation and Events for the City of Eaton Rapids. “Another 20 to 30 volunteers joined in during the event itself, managing the Urban Air Event Tent, Beer Tent, Kids Zone, Triathlon, and more. City staff from every department, as well as the City Council, went far beyond their regular workload to help bring it all to life. It’s a great example of how Eaton Rapids comes together to bring something so special to our community.”

REFLECTIONS OF COMMUNITY

Throughout the weekend, Eaton Rapids showed its heart. From the Airstream owners who opened their doors for curious visitors, to the athletes cheering one another through the final leg of the triathlon, and the families sharing fall fun on the island, it was a vibrant community in motion. As the colorful powder settled along the river path, and the last trailer rolled out, one impression remained clear: the Island City had never looked, or felt, more awake and alive.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook just how important it is to feel truly connected to others. We rush through busy schedules, manage multiple responsibilities, and interact more through screens than in person. Nonetheless, people are increasingly expressing a desire for belonging, meaning, and authentic community.

Research confirms what many instinctively know: human connection is essential to both emotional and physical health. The U.S. Surgeon General has identified loneliness and isolation as urgent public health concerns, linked to higher rates of heart disease, anxiety, and cognitive decline.

A Harvard University decades-long study on adult development found that meaningful relationships are the strongest predictor of lifelong happiness and well-being. Their findings reinforce a powerful truth: we are healthiest and happiest when we feel part of something larger than ourselves.

Across the country, more people are rediscovering that sense of connection in local community groups, especially service clubs. These organizations create opportunities not only to volunteer but to build lasting friendships and support networks. In towns like Grand Ledge and nearby Delta Township and Lansing, long-standing chapters of Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, and Optimists continue to play a vital role in bringing people together.

In Grand Ledge, the commitment to service shows up in lasting, hands-on efforts that make a real difference. It’s the kind of steady, behind-the-scenes work that not only helps meet local needs, but also creates a rhythm of service and camaraderie among members.

“Grand Ledge Lions Club has been serving the community since 1944 and volunteers at several local events such as Music in the Park, Ledges Classic Car Show, and the Blue Oval Blast Car Show,” said Brandi Bauer, a longtime member of the club. ”We run concessions with the continued support of A&W. We couldn’t do it without them.”

Proceeds from the concession stand help to fund many of the different projects the Grand Ledge Lions Club supports. Service clubs in Grand Ledge, Delta Township, and Greater Lansing raise funds to give money back to nonprofits, student school programs, shelters, food banks, and other nonprofits. In Grand Ledge, projects include Adopt-A-Highway clean ups, high school scholarship programs, Blessings in a Backpack, and Music in the Park. In fact, the Rotary of Grand Ledge provided $90,000 in matching funds for the Jaycee Park Rotary Club Stage that was completed in 2020.

Yet these clubs are more than their fundraisers, meetings or projects. They offer a place where neighbors become friends, where ideas are shared and put into action, and where members work side by side to strengthen the community. From coordinating food drives to organizing youth programs or local beautification efforts, service clubs give people the chance to make a difference and feel connected in the process.

Sociologist Robert Putnam, in his widely cited book Bowling Alone, documented the steady decline in civic engagement over the past several decades. He warned that when people stop participating in group activities, trust and cooperation begin to fade. Fortunately, this decline is not irreversible. Communities that invest in connection can become stronger, more resilient, and more vibrant.

For anyone feeling isolated or searching for a way to get more involved, attending a local service club meeting can be a simple but powerful first step. These gatherings are welcoming spaces where all are invited to contribute, learn, and belong.

By joining or supporting local service clubs, we don’t just give back, we reconnect. We build friendships, deepen our roots, and remind ourselves that we’re not alone. At a time when so many people are quietly searching for a deeper connection, local service clubs offer a path forward.

“The Grand Ledge Rotary Club truly exemplifies how service organizations form the backbone of our communities,” said Ariel Backus, Grand Ledge Rotary Club president. “Through their quiet yet consistent dedication, they weave a vital tapestry of support, compassion, and progress that touches lives across Grand Ledge.”

If you, a family member, or a friend is looking for more purpose, connection, or a fresh start, a local service club can be a meaningful place to begin. What starts as a simple step often leads to lasting relationships, a renewed sense of purpose, and the feeling of truly being at home. And, it’s not just a nice feeling, research shows that people who feel connected to others tend to be healthier, more resilient, and more satisfied with life.

When we build community, we also build strength — emotional, physical, and collective. Service clubs offer more than fellowship by helping people and communities thrive and by reminding us that connection isn’t just good for the soul, it’s vital for our well-being.

Meet Local Service Clubs

A look at four major organizations serving our community and the world.

Each of these clubs contributes to the well-being of Grand Ledge, Delta Township, or the greater Lansing area and invests in its future through a variety of community service projects, by hosting family-friendly events, and by awarding scholarships to area high school students each year.

Kiwanis International

Kiwanis has been serving children and communities since 1915. With 537,000 members worldwide across 85 countries, Kiwanis clubs contribute more than 18.5 million hours of service annually. Kiwanis clubs focus on improving the lives of children through service, education, and leadership development. Their projects range from sponsoring reading programs and school supplies to supporting food pantries and youth sports. Visit kiwanis.org.

In recent years, their mission has expanded to include support for diabetes awareness, hunger relief, childhood cancer, disaster response, and environmental efforts.
If you’ve recently purchased a home in Mid-Michigan, or if you’re settling into one you’ve owned for years, it helps to understand the bigger picture of home maintenance. With some forethought and a little planning, you can stay ahead of wear and tear, protect your investment, and enjoy a home that’s comfortable and dependable for decades to come.

Keep in mind that Michigan’s climate plays a role in your home’s ongoing maintenance requirements. Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snowfall, and humidity all affect the lifespan of materials. What holds up in a dry southern climate may wear more quickly in Mid-Michigan.

Use Your Home Inspection as a Starting Point

When you bought your home, you likely received a professional home inspection. Many people set this report aside after the closing process, but it’s actually one of the most useful tools you have. That report tells a story about your home’s condition at the time of purchase. It includes the estimated age of major systems like your roof, furnace, and water heater, and often points out areas to watch.

Instead of treating it as a checklist for immediate repairs, think of your inspection report as a long-range maintenance guide. Look for notes like “monitor,” “showing signs of wear,” or “near the end of its lifespan.” Those clues help you plan what needs attention in the next five to ten years, and what might come up further down the road.

Think in Timeframes, Not Just Tasks

Some home projects are monthly or seasonal, but others show up on a longer cycle. By understanding when certain components of your home typically need replacement, you can avoid being caught off guard. You can also budget ahead for the bigger expenses that come with the aging of your home. While not exhaustive, the list below includes many of the larger maintenance items that arise over the long term. Be sure to check with your home inspection report or with local home services professionals for advice unique to your home.

Every 3 to 5 Years

Refresh mulch beds and amend compacted garden soil

Trim or reshape mature trees to prevent storm damage and maintain structure

Reseal decks and porches, especially wood surfaces

Touch up exterior paint on trim, doors, and other exposed areas

Inspect and touch up garage doors and thresholds

Every 5 to 10 Years

Reseal asphalt driveways

Repaint or restain wood siding and trim

Replace water heater

Refresh weather stripping and caulking

Refinish hardwood floors

Replace aging shrubs or perennials that have outgrown their space or lost vigor

Regrade yard or lawn areas where settling, erosion, or poor drainage develops

Remove invasive or dying trees that pose a risk to the home or utility lines

Every 10 to 20 Years

Replace roof shingles

Upgrade furnaces and air conditioners

Replace older windows

Repair or replace gutters

Replace major appliances

Within 20 to 30 Years or More

Replace original siding

Update plumbing or electrical systems in an older home

Address foundation or structural issues if needed

Replace or repair septic systems

Invest in major hardscaping updates such as patios, retaining walls, or walkways

Don’t Overlook Tree Maintenance

Landscaping often gets attention in the first few years of homeownership, but mature trees deserve special consideration as part of your long-term maintenance plan. Especially in Mid-Michigan, where storms, wet soil, and rapid tree growth are common, regular tree evaluations should be a part of your home maintenance schedule.

“Tree care isn’t just about reacting after damage is done — it’s about planning ahead,” said Justin Brummette, owner of Big Kid Tree Worx. “A tree that’s too close to a structure, showing signs of decay, or suffering from poor drainage can become a costly hazard. In Michigan’s fast-growing conditions, trimming every few years is essential.”

Brummette also notes that removing one tree can change the wind dynamics on your property. “Removing a tree might expose others to winds they’ve never faced before, so smart removal and maintenance matters. And if a tree does fall on your roof, insurance won’t step in until it’s gone and the roof is visible. So, act quickly, remove the tree, and get the roof tarped before more damage is done.”

It’s smart to schedule professional inspections and not delay when a tree is showing signs of distress. Proactive maintenance is always more affordable, and less stressful, than emergency removal after a storm.

Budgeting and Planning Ahead

Experts often recommend that homeowners set aside one to three percent of their home’s value each year for maintenance. One percent may be sufficient for newer homes or those in excellent condition, while older homes or those with deferred maintenance may require more than three percent.

Having a long-term maintenance fund can help you handle big expenses like a new furnace or roof without added stress. It also allows you to take care of things on your own timeline rather than waiting until something breaks.

Use the Right Materials and Methods

Proper maintenance isn’t just about keeping things clean or in working order. It’s also about using the right materials and following recommended care instructions. These choices can make future remodeling projects smoother and help you avoid costly surprises later.

“I highly recommend people to not use Murphy’s Oil Soap to clean their hardwood floors. Stick to the properly formulated wood floor cleaners,” said Nik Morehouse, owner of Morehouse Improvements LLC. “Contaminants from using the wrong cleaners can wreak havoc on the results when you have them refinished.”

Using the wrong products — like interior paint on exterior trim or construction adhesive in place of proper caulk — may seem minor, but they can cause long-term issues. Over time, these materials may peel, crack, or fail to hold up under changing conditions. Choosing the right products from the start helps protect your home and can save time, frustration, and money when it’s time to remodel.

Pride in a Home Well Cared For

A well-maintained home is more than a financial asset. It’s a place that feels safe, grounded, and comfortable. Planning ahead for long-term maintenance helps protect that feeling, while also preserving the structure and systems that keep your home running smoothly.

This approach is about being thoughtful, prepared, and proud of the way you care for your space. That includes using the right materials for the job, following proper guidelines, and making choices that support your home’s long-term health. You don’t need to tackle everything at once. Focus on what matters most right now, use your inspection report as a guide, and check in with your plan each year. The care you invest today helps your home remain strong, efficient, and inviting for many years to come.

In towns like Mason, long-standing chapters of Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, and Optimists continue to play a vital role in bringing people together.

In Mason, the commitment to service shows up in lasting, hands-on efforts that make a real difference. It’s the kind of steady, behind-the-scenes work that not only helps meet local needs, but also creates a rhythm of service and camaraderie among members.

“Mason Kiwanis has been sponsoring the Red Cross blood drive every eight weeks for 67 years,” said Elaine Ferris, a longtime member of the club. “We take care of everything— setup, staffing, and takedown. Right now, it’s held at the Methodist Church on the first Thursday of even-numbered months while St. James Church is under renovation.”

Yet these clubs are more than their meetings or projects.

“You come to help others, but you end up helping yourself too,” said Doug Klein, a member of the Mason Lions Club. “There’s nothing like working together toward something that matters.”

By joining or supporting local service clubs, we don’t just give back, we reconnect. We build friendships, deepen our roots, and remind ourselves that we’re not alone. At a time when so many people are quietly searching for a deeper connection, local service clubs offer a path forward.

If you, a family member, or a friend is looking for more purpose, connection, or a fresh start, a local service club can be a meaningful place to begin. What starts as a simple step often leads to lasting relationships, a renewed sense of purpose, and the feeling of truly being at home. And, it’s not just a nice feeling; research shows that people who feel connected to others tend to be healthier, more resilient, and more satisfied with life.

When we build community, we also build strength— emotional, physical, and collective. Service clubs offer more than fellowship by helping people and communities thrive and by reminding us that connection isn’t just good for the soul, it’s vital for our well-being.

Meet Mason’s Service Clubs

In small towns, a few cherished places do more than serve great food and drinks—they create lively experiences that unite the community. Local favorites like River Raisin Distillery and The Village Tap go beyond their culinary niches to offer dynamic entertainment options that draw residents together for unforgettable moments and add a vibrant twist to the community’s social scene.

The owners of these local gems recognized a need for spaces that offer more than meals and drinks. A warm ambiance awaits at The Tap, followed by familiar faces behind the bar, the comforting sizzle of burgers on the grill, and affordable prices. Meanwhile, River Raisin Distillery invites you into a vibrant atmosphere with live music, seasonal cocktails, and appetizers that are as memorable as the experiences they create.

The Village Tap: A Home for Music, Tradition, and Community

The Village Tap isn’t just a bar—it’s a cornerstone of Manchester’s community, steeped in decades of family, tradition, and a shared love for music and connection. Jack and Heidi Stein, who have owned the Tap since Jack’s parents purchased it in 1976, have carried forward the welcoming spirit that makes this space feel like home.

“We are fortunate to have staff who focus on making everyone that walks through our doors feel welcome and important,” said Stein. “The sense of belonging and familiarity keeps people returning for that personable, hometown experience.”

Music has always been at the heart of The Tap, beginning with Oktoberfest, where Bavarian tunes complemented traditional German dinners to celebrate Manchester’s heritage. Over the years, the Steins expanded the offerings, introducing events like “Roosterpalooza” during the Manchester Chicken Broil.

“We encourage people to bring their dinners, listen to music, and enjoy the atmosphere under the tent that night,” said Stein. “As times changed, it evolved into Rocktoberfest.”

Today, The Village Tap is renowned for its weekly open mic nights, where local “jammers” share the stage with headlining acts in an atmosphere alive with energy and creativity. These lively performances have fostered a strong network of musicians and music-loving patrons drawn to The Tap’s inviting spirit. John Mooneyham, co-founder of the Manchester Underground Music and Art nonprofit and the coordinator of most of The Tap’s music, says the Wednesday open mic nights are a favorite.

“Local musicians love to get a show at The Tap because they know it’s a place with enthusiastic, music-loving patrons,” said Mooneyham. “Southeast Michigan is a hotbed of musicians of all levels, and there’s a huge pool to draw acts from.”

This connection to music is woven into Manchester’s cultural fabric. Michael “Cub” Koda, a Manchester High School graduate who wrote the hit Smokin’ in the Boy’s Room, which Motley Crue later covered, left an indelible mark on the town’s musical history. The Tap continues this legacy by hosting local and regional acts, keeping Manchester’s passion for live music alive and thriving.

The Steins’ dedication to Manchester extends beyond music. They actively support school programs, as their son, a high-school student, is involved in band, quiz bowl, robotics, and the wrestling program. Additionally, they collaborate with local businesses and work closely with organizations like the Manchester Men’s Club and Community Resource Center. Heidi, a retired Manchester Community Schools educator, and Jack, a Manchester native, exemplify the close-knit values of their town while continuing to enrich it with events like acoustic jams, holiday celebrations, and sporting event watch parties.

The Steins and their staff are always ready for a good time. Whether friends gather at The Tap for an evening of Bunco or a reunion or strangers become friends over a game of pool, there’s always fun in the air. People can stop by for a quick drink and food while enjoying live acoustic music or for no reason other than good conversation.

Beyond the Barrel: River Raisin Distillery Builds Community Through Connection

River Raisin Distillery, while known for its handcrafted spirits and show-stopping Bloody Marys topped with everything from crispy bacon and boneless chicken to soft pretzels and cheesecake, is a space where stories are shared, connections are forged, and memories are made. From their opening in 2020, Joseph and Krista Jarvis set out to make their distillery more than a business.

Starting with simple themed weekends and food trucks, they’ve grown their offerings to include live music, arts and crafts classes, food demonstrations, and special events catering to various interests.

“It’s all about bringing people together and creating memorable experiences beyond just food and drinks,” said Jarvis.

River Raisin’s versatility is evident in its event offerings. From weddings and baby showers to fundraisers for local schools and nonprofits, the distillery has become a go-to destination for celebrations.

Signature events like the Manchester Co-Op Preschool Chili Cook-Off and comedy nights have become staples, while holiday-themed activities provide a unique way to spend time with loved ones. Master the art of sushi, learn all the tricks of getting a perfect sourdough, paint a relaxing dot mandala, or line dance the night away — there’s something for everyone!

The distillery also serves as a launchpad for local talent. Mooneyham says that Manchester Underground commonly hosts once-a-month music events at River Raisin, including the soulful music of Jon Torrence, contemporary folk music of Kate Hinote Trio, and the bluesy sounds of Chef Chris and his Nairobi Trio.

“We love focusing on local people,” said Jarvis. “We’ve been a starting point for many new businesses and individuals to grow and make connections.”

Things are always happening at River Raisin; but the Jarvises aren’t content to rest on their laurels. Exciting expansions are underway, including an expanded tasting room, a renovated event space, and a new outdoor patio perfect for soaking up the beauty of Manchester. The team looks forward to another year, gearing up to release new spirits and continuing to innovate and delight their patrons.

‘“As for entertainment options, we’re always open to new ideas,” Jarvis said. “We love trying out different types of events to create a destination where people can have an unforgettable experience.”

The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.

“People love having more options right here in little ole Manchester,” Jarvis said. “We’re proud to be part of what makes this town unique.”

The Jarvises are deeply involved in local initiatives, serving on community boards and contributing to projects that drive Manchester forward. They said they’re proud to be one of the many reasons folks choose to visit the town and experience everything it offers–and it shows.

Where People Gather, and Memories Are Made

Whether savoring a meal, reconnecting at a reunion, or enjoying an unforgettable night of live music, The Village Tap and River Raisin Distillery stand as the twin pillars of Manchester’s vibrant community life. The Village Tap remains the town’s beating heart, where cherished traditions thrive and new memories are born. At the same time, River Raisin Distillery transforms every visit into an experience—whether through a local band’s summer serenade, a hands-on craft class, or a perfectly crafted cocktail.

Together, these establishments embody what makes Manchester unique: businesses fueled by passion, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to their community. For locals and visitors alike, they offer more than great food, drinks, and entertainment—they’re spaces where stories unfold, connections deepen, and everyone shares the rewards of a thriving, united town.
