The Eaton County Courthouse Museum stands as a cherished landmark in the heart of Eaton County, Michigan. More than an architectural marvel, the museum plays a vital role in enriching the community by preserving local heritage, providing educational opportunities, and serving as a hub for many community events. These events include Frontier Days, Charlotte Celebrates, Charloween and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

“The Courthouse Square Museum anchors Eaton County’s identity by honoring the resilience and creativity of its people and ensuring that the stories of Eaton County aren’t lost to time but remain alive for future generations,” said Deb Malewski, a Courthouse Square Association (CSA) board member. “It also has become a major gathering place for festivals, historical activities, and volunteer programs that bring people together.”

The Eaton County Courthouse Museum is dedicated to safeguarding the history of Eaton County. By maintaining and displaying historical artifacts, documents, and photographs, the museum offers residents and visitors alike an opportunity to connect with the area’s past. This preservation fosters a sense of identity and pride among community members, ensuring that the county’s unique stories and traditions are passed down through generations.

The museum serves as an invaluable educational resource for schools, families, and lifelong learners. Guided tours, interactive exhibits, and special programs introduce visitors to local history, government, and architecture. These experiences are designed to engage all ages, making history accessible and relevant. Students can benefit from hands-on learning and exposure to primary sources, which enhances their understanding of the region.

The courthouse building itself is a testament to the county’s architectural heritage. Its preservation and adaptive reuse as a museum allows residents and visitors to appreciate historic craftsmanship and design. The museum’s presence enhances the cultural landscape of Eaton County, making it a destination for those interested in history, architecture, and community life. This year we started our elevator project. When complete in early 2026, visitors who cannot use the stairs will be able to visit all three levels of the building. A huge project like this is only possible by donations and grants. We are still accepting donations to complete the elevator project. Please visit our website to donate: csamuseum.net.

By attracting visitors from neighboring regions and beyond, the Eaton County Courthouse Museum contributes to the local economy. Tourists often explore surrounding shops, restaurants, and attractions, providing a boost to local businesses. The museum’s reputation as a historical landmark increases Eaton County’s visibility as a travel destination.

The Eaton County Courthouse Museum is much more than a repository of artifacts; it is a vibrant center for history, education, and community engagement. Its ongoing commitment to preserving local heritage and fostering civic pride makes it an indispensable asset to the people of Eaton County. As the museum continues to evolve, its positive impact on the community will only grow, ensuring that future generations benefit from its presence.

“The 1885 Eaton County Courthouse continues to be the most iconic building in Eaton County. The CSA is proud to be the custodian of the building and Courthouse Square,” said Rod Weaver, CSA Board President. “Over the years, the “Square” has been an important venue for community activities and celebrations such as to honor Vietnam Veterans, Charlotte Celebrates, Frontier Days, Festival of Oddities, Halloween and Christmas. And lastly, the Courthouse Square Museum celebrates mid-Michigan history.” We hope to see you soon for a tour!

Charlotte’s Themed Festivals Draw Thousands Each Year

Charlotte, Michigan, is a town that knows how to celebrate. Its diverse array of festivals not only highlight the town’s rich history and cultural heritage, but also bring the community together in joyous revelry. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, the festivals in Charlotte offer a glimpse into the heart and soul of this welcoming community.

Festivals and events in Charlotte happen throughout the year and range from Artisans Markets and the Bluegrass Festival to the Halloween and Lighted Holiday parades. Three of the most popular festivals that attract thousands include the Michigan Nordic Fire Festival, A Festival of Oddities, and Charlotte Frontier Days. From the nostalgic charm of the Frontier Days with its pioneer and cowboy themes, to the excitement of the Nordic Fire Festival, featuring Viking battles and period crafts, to the quirky and mysterious allure of A Festival of Oddities with its unusual exhibits and eccentric performers, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

“Charlotte has been successful in creating new events that appeal to a wider array of age groups by choosing unique themes that are a bit edgy,” said William SaintAmour, Executive Director of Cobalt Community Research. “Charlotte annually attracts 1.5 million people from out of town including its 30 different festivals and events every year.”

To learn more about the people who attend Charlotte’s Festivals, Cobalt Community Research collects detailed data on four different festivals throughout the year. For example, the data show that the Nordic Fire Festival draws in people from outside of Charlotte, as does the Festival of Oddities. And, according to SaintAmour, while country music and frontier themes are making a comeback, Charlotte’s Frontier Days appeals more to locals.

Attracting diverse crowds to the festivals is only possible due to the robust support from local businesses and community volunteers. Many of Charlotte’s festivals are free or very affordable, thanks to generous business sponsorships. And, an informal group of volunteers, in partnership with the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Charlotte Rising, and other nonprofits, meets monthly over coffee to help coordinate all the festivals in Charlotte.

“There is a climate of openness to new ideas, with law enforcement and city officials being very supportive,” said area resident Don Sovey. “So, if it makes financial and logical sense, it just takes one person to lead an event and get a festival started. The openness has led this community to host 74 band performances as part of our many festivals, making Charlotte a strong music destination in Michigan.

While Charlotte Frontier Days has been a tradition since 1970, the Michigan Nordic Fire Festival turns 10 next year, and, the newest, which started in 2019, is A Festival of Oddities. Historical reenactments, distinctive music, captivating shows, and unique vendors come together in these popular festivals. Each event showcases the community’s creativity and a rich cultural tapestry.

Charlotte Frontier Days

An annual tradition held in the second week of September, Charlotte Frontier Days celebrates the town’s pioneer heritage with a blend of historical reenactments, a rodeo, and a wide variety of family-friendly activities. Visitors can step back in time to the 1800s and experience frontier life, complete with a living history encampment.

Frontier Days also features live music, a classic car show, and a crafts fair, making it a must-visit for many locals and people from across the state. The festival runs from Wednesday evening through Sunday afternoon. Shops and restaurants throughout Charlotte and downtown offer specials and a community-wide garage sale is ongoing during the event.

At the fairgrounds on Wednesday and Thursday the Saloon hosts a Pageant, Karaoke, Bingo, and a Scholarship Contest, as well as performances by musicians and dancers. Friday is a free family fun day, which includes bounce houses, clowns, face painting, balloon animals, old timey photos, and the Eaton County Mobile Recreation trailer. Saturday enjoys the Frontier Days Grand Parade and a free movie at Eaton Theatre. Frontier Days wraps up Sunday afternoon with an All American Dog Show and High School Rodeo. These are just a few of the happenings during the fun-filled annual celebration.

Michigan Nordic Fire Festival

Held in February, the Michigan Nordic Fire Festival brings a taste of Viking culture to Charlotte. Attendees can enjoy Viking-themed activities, including battle reenactments, a vendor market, and Mead Hall. This unique event draws enthusiasts of all ages who are fascinated by Norse history and mythology.

“In 2024, there were more than 20,000 attendees at the Nordic Fire Festival, held at the Eaton County Fairgrounds,” said SaintAmour. “More vendors and activities are added to the festival each year. Next year will include more mead, beer, and cider as well as some historically inspired artillery, including a ballista, which is essentially a giant crossbow.”

While it may be muddy and cold, dressing warm in Viking attire is encouraged, and there are tents with heaters to stave off some of the cold. Friendly competitions such as hammer, spear and stone throwing, stone carry, and tug-of-war also keep festive goers warm. Demonstrations and reenactments throughout the event include Viking camp, cooking, combat shows, blacksmithing, mead making, and Norse living. Hands-on activities include ax and spear throwing, archery, and a kids’ quest.

Gate passes for the Michigan Nordic Fire Festival are just $20 per person for the entire weekend, and includes admission to Mead Hall. Free shuttle rides and free parking are available at Parkview Elementary or Downtown Charlotte at Beach Market.

A Festival of Oddities

The weekend before Labor Day, A Festival of Oddities offers a unique experience with its focus on the strange and unusual. It features oddity vendors, paranormal speakers, sideshow performers, and other quirky attractions that cater to those with a taste for the bizarre.

Last year’s A Festival of Oddities brought in 10,000 visitors, while this year the organizers anticipate 17,000 attendees. Bostwick and Harris streets beside the courthouse square will be closed during the event. The festival will also have more vendors, and will be expanding to the Beach Market and the Congregational Commons.

“Even with the increased growth we want to keep A Festival of Oddities downtown at the Courthouse Museum,” said Julie Kimmer, Manager of Courthouse Square. “Not only for the atmosphere of the museum, and to support the downtown; it is by far our biggest fundraiser of the year.”

This year’s theme is creepy crawlers, sponsored by Pruess Pets, and will include animal shows, information about exotic animals, and some pet adoptions. Participating organizations include Bugs on Wheels, Spood Crew, Winston the Tegu, Queen Bee Apiary, Saving Scales Reptile Rescue of Michigan, and Exotic Missions rescue and sanctuary.

Visiting the vendors and shows outside the Courthouse Museum is free, and tours and admission to the courthouse is just $5.00. Several Food Trucks with unique and delicious menus will be near the Courthouse again this year.

Explore the Heart of Charlotte

The Michigan Nordic Fire Festival, A Festival of Oddities, and Charlotte Frontier Days aren’t the only vibrant experiences available to event goers. Charlotte has an engaging year-round festival scene. See the next page for additional information about some of Charlotte’s other festivals. Or, to learn more about Charlotte and its many festivals, visit the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce website at micharlotte.org. As you attend one or more of Charlotte’s festivals in the coming year, be sure to check out downtown Charlotte and its unique restaurants and shops during your visit.

“An array of amazing destination restaurants, a women’s clothing store, an affordable wood art store, a remodeled multipurpose market, a new outdoor performance stage, and a new bookstore are all results of this strategic community effort to make downtown Charlotte a more welcoming and attractive place,” said Sovey. “Having festivals downtown creates a cool, fun atmosphere that attracts younger people and makes them more likely to raise their families in Charlotte.”

Charlotte, Michigan, with its spirit of celebration and diverse and vibrant festival calendar, offers something for everyone. These events not only celebrate the town’s heritage and culture but also foster a strong sense of community, providing memorable experiences for both residents and visitors. From historical reenactments to live music and unique cultural celebrations, there’s always something to look forward to in Charlotte. Make sure to mark your calendars to experience the charm and hospitality that Charlotte’s festivals have to offer.

Owning a home is a dream for many, and turning that dream into reality requires careful planning and smart financial decisions. Financing your first home can be a complex process, but with the right knowledge and steps, you can navigate the journey with confidence. In this article, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to make your homeownership dreams come true.

Step 1: Assess Your Financial Health

Before you dive into the world of mortgages and loans, it’s crucial to assess your current financial situation. Start by reviewing your credit score, as it plays a significant role in determining your eligibility for a mortgage and the interest rates you’ll be offered. Obtain a credit report from a reputable agency and address any discrepancies or issues.

Next, calculate your debt-to-income ratio, which is the percentage of your gross monthly income that goes toward paying debts. Lenders often use this ratio to evaluate your ability to manage monthly payments. Aim for a ratio below 43%, as it is generally considered a healthy benchmark.

Step 2: Set a Realistic Budget

Once you have a clear understanding of your financial health, establish a realistic budget for your home purchase. Consider your current expenses, future financial goals, and potential changes in income. Your budget should not only cover the mortgage but also factor in property taxes, homeowners’ insurance, maintenance costs, and potential homeowners association fees.

Take advantage of online calculators to estimate monthly mortgage payments based on different loan terms and interest rates. This will give you a better idea of the price range you can comfortably afford.

Step 3: Save for a Down Payment

One of the most significant financial hurdles for first-time homebuyers is the down payment. While some loan programs allow for lower down payments, saving as much as possible can open up more options and reduce the overall cost of your mortgage.

Experts recommend aiming for a down payment of at least 20% of the home’s purchase price to avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI) and secure better loan terms. Create a dedicated savings account for your down payment and explore government programs or employer-sponsored assistance that may help you save more efficiently.

Step 4: Explore Mortgage Options

With your finances in order and a down payment in the works, it’s time to explore mortgage options. There are various types of mortgages, each with its own advantages and considerations. Common options include fixed-rate mortgages, adjustable-rate mortgages, FHA loans, and VA loans.

Compare interest rates, loan terms, and closing costs from different lenders to find the best fit for your financial situation. Don’t hesitate to consult with mortgage professionals who can provide personalized advice based on your needs.

“Our primary focus is on education. We can evaluate your financial circumstances early in the process, discuss how to enhance your credit, and help you select the most suitable mortgage option,” said Kaitlyn Beno, a Mortgage Loan Originator at Fifth Third Bank. “Many people don’t have a 20% down payment, and while there are various programs available to assist, our role is to guide you in choosing the mortgage that best fits your specific needs.”

Step 5: Get Pre-Approved

Once you’ve identified a suitable mortgage option, seek pre-approval from your chosen lender. This involves providing detailed financial information and undergoing a credit check to determine the maximum loan amount you qualify for.

“Obtaining a pre-approval letter not only strengthens your position when making an offer on a home, but it also clarifies your budget, ensuring you focus on homes within your financial reach,” said Beno. “It’s crucial to avoid spending time considering properties that are beyond your budget.”

Step 6: Find the Right Home

Armed with a pre-approval letter and a solid understanding of your budget, you can start the exciting journey of finding your dream home. Work with a real estate agent who understands your preferences, and explore neighborhoods that align with your lifestyle and future plans.

Consider the long-term aspects of a property, such as its resale potential, school districts, and proximity to essential amenities. Don’t hesitate to attend open houses, ask questions, and gather as much information as possible before making a decision.

Step 7: Putting in an Offer

When buying a home, making your offer stand out to sellers is crucial, especially in competitive markets. It can be discouraging when houses are selling for thousands of dollars over asking price and many are all cash offers. Even if you don’t have cash, but are preapproved for a mortgage, there are other ways to strengthen your offer.

“You might waive contingencies like the home inspection, be flexible on closing dates, or give more earnest money,” said Stacee Robison, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “Some more creative ways include an escalation clause or an appraisal gap guarantee.”

An escalation clause in your offer can automatically increase your bid in response to competing offers, ensuring you don’t overpay yet remain competitive up to a maximum limit. Additionally, including an appraisal gap guarantee is a commitment that you will cover any difference between the offer price and a lower appraised value, providing reassurance to sellers that the sale will proceed as planned. Using these strategies can significantly enhance your offer’s attractiveness to sellers, potentially making the difference in securing your dream home.

Step 8: Navigate the Closing Process

Once you’ve found the perfect home and your offer has been accepted, it’s time to navigate the closing process. This involves finalizing the mortgage, completing a home inspection, and ensuring all necessary paperwork is in order.

Review the closing costs carefully and be prepared to cover expenses such as attorney fees, title insurance, and property taxes. Work closely with your real estate agent and mortgage lender to ensure a smooth and successful closing.

Homeownership Awaits

Financing and buying your first home may seem like a daunting task, but with careful planning and the right steps, you can turn your homeownership dreams into reality. Assess your financial health, set a realistic budget, save for a down payment, explore mortgage options, get pre-approved, find the right home, put in a competitive offer, and navigate the closing process. By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to unlocking the door to your dream home and enjoying the many benefits of homeownership.

Deciding on a career path is a significant decision, but if you’re inclined towards hands-on work that yields immediate, tangible results, the skilled trades are worth considering. These professions are not just jobs; they are critical roles that keep society running smoothly and offer personal fulfillment, financial stability, and numerous other benefits. Students in the any Eaton County school district may embark on a journey in pursuing a career in the skilled trades in a variety of programs available through Career and Technical Education (CTE).

Benefits of the Skilled Trades

Pursuing a career in the skilled trades can be a smart, rewarding decision. Skilled trades people are always in high demand due to the essential nature of their work, which includes construction, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and more. The persistent need for these skills means that job security in this sector tends to be robust.

Variety, a sense of accomplishment, and financial considerations contribute to high job satisfaction in many of the skilled trades. Working in a trade often means no two days are the same. The work can involve different locations, varied projects, and unique challenges, which keeps the workday interesting and dynamic. There is a unique satisfaction that comes from crafting or repairing something with your own hands. Additionally, skilled trade jobs often offer competitive salaries that are comparable to or even exceed those of jobs requiring a four-year college degree.

“Since most skilled trades require vocational training or apprenticeships rather than a four-year college degree, individuals can enter the workforce sooner and with significantly less student debt,” said Vlad Lebedintsev, Assistant Superintendent for Career & Technical Education at Eaton Regional Education Service Agency (Eaton RESA). “Many students have the ability to earn a good income after graduation from a CTE program by going into the workforce, into an apprenticeship, or other advanced learning programs in their industry.”

Other financial advantages for skilled trades people include the opportunity to work overtime and the opportunity for advancement. Skilled trades people can advance in their careers by increasing levels of certification and specialization, by moving into management and supervisory roles, or by going into business for themselves.

Spotlight on the Skilled Trades

For those who prefer active, engaging work environments over desk jobs, skilled trades provide the opportunity to work with their hands, solve practical problems, and see tangible results. Here are just a few of the fields available in the skilled trades:

Electrician: Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power systems in homes, businesses, and factories, ensuring that electricity is safely and efficiently brought to every device that needs it.

Plumber: Plumbers install and repair pipes and fixtures that carry water, gas, or other fluids in residential and commercial settings. They are critical in designing systems that effectively manage water and waste.

Carpenter: Carpenters construct and repair structures, buildings, and homes. Some work as builders, others as remodelers, or they may also build custom furniture and cabinetry.

HVAC Technician: HVAC technicians work on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings. Some work in commercial buildings and others service or install equipment in homes.

Welder: Welders use equipment to join metal parts, fixing and fabricating metal structures, tools, and vehicles across a variety of industries. Welding requires a steady hand and precise attention to detail.

Heavy Equipment Operator/Mechanic: Heavy equipment operators work with large machinery and vehicles used in construction, mining, agriculture, and other industries. They also need to know how to maintain, and repair heavy equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and loaders.

Automotive Technician/Mechanic: Automotive technicians diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicles. They work on engines, transmissions, brakes, and other mechanical and electrical systems.

Empowering Students to Build a Bright Future

From electricians wiring up our world to plumbers ensuring our water runs smoothly, skilled trades people are the backbone of our infrastructure. But how does one get started in this fulfilling line of work? High school CTE programs serve as a launching pad, providing students with the practical skills, industry connections, and career readiness needed to thrive in the trades.

CTE programs provide students with hands-on experience and exposure to various occupations, helping them discover their passions and strengths. Juniors and Seniors at any Eaton County High School who are going into the skilled trades attend high school for a half day, then they attend a skilled trades CTE program for a half day at the Lansing Community College (LCC) West Campus or at AIS Construction Equipment in Lansing. Training at these locations includes construction, welding, mechanical engineering, heavy equipment operation, or automotive trades.

“The hands-on nature of our CTE programs keeps students engaged and invested in their education, resulting in higher on-time graduation rates than the statewide average,” said Lebedintsev. “Through these experiences, students not only gain high school credits, but also industry certifications that set them up for success in their chosen trades.”

From using tools to mastering technical knowledge, students gain practical skills directly applicable to the workforce. Through Eaton RESA’s partnerships with local businesses and professionals, these programs offer networking opportunities and real-world insights. Each program helps to prepare students for immediate employment and further education. Some offer industry-recognized certifications.

Transitioning from Classroom to Career

With a solid foundation from CTE programs, students seamlessly transition into the workforce or pursue advanced training. Armed with practical skills, industry connections, and a clear career path, they can enter careers in the skilled trades, shaping the world around them one project at a time.

“I’ve been working on my apprenticeship at Liskey’s Auto & Truck Service for the past four months,” said Talon Richey, a senior at Grand Ledge High School. “This experience is amazing and I love learning and applying what I did at Eaton RESA/LCC. I know that I can always get a job in this field and I really enjoy making money!”

Choosing a career in the skilled trades isn’t just about finding a job—it’s about pursuing an occupation that offers stability, satisfaction, and meaningful impact. High school CTE programs serve as the first step on this journey, empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and connections needed to succeed in the workforce. Whether you’re wiring circuits, welding metal, or building structures, the world of skilled trades awaits—ready to welcome you into its ranks.

Step into the Eaton Theatre and it’s like entering another world. From the rich red tone of the walls and ceiling to the sparkling chandelier, the ornate lobby exudes vintage appeal. There are cases filled with memorabilia documenting the theater’s history, an old-time ticket booth, and of course a well-stocked concession stand. While the theater offers patrons a quintessential hometown movie theater experience, it also features modern restorations, enhancing comfort and quality.

Rich in History

For over 90 years, the iconic Eaton Theatre has been providing residents in the Charlotte area a positive space where they can enjoy themselves and spend time together. Throughout those years, the various owners have learned to strike the delicate balance between keeping up with the changing times and cherishing the nostalgia of simpler times. According to Leann Owen, current owner and operator of the theater, the updates to the theater have preserved its original character, while at the same time giving the building a fresh, new atmosphere.

“We like to think of it as a historical look with a modern twist,” Owen said.

In addition to top quality new seats, carpet, and marquee, there is also a retro 1980s style arcade room where folks can take a trip down memory lane and enjoy playing some of their favorite video games from years past. And although the theater has a nostalgic look and feel, it regularly features first run movies.

The Eaton Theatre has been in downtown Charlotte since 1931. While small businesses tend to come and go, the theater has endured many challenges and stood the test of time, remaining an integral part of the community for almost a century.

“We have patrons who came to this theater as children, had their first date here, and now they come here with their grandchildren,” Owen said. “There have been marriage proposals here… family holiday gatherings…this place is full of memories.”

According to Bryan Myrkle, Community Development Director of Charlotte, the Eaton Theatre is one of the city’s most important downtown businesses, attracting a full range of residents from many walks of life.

“The Eaton Theatre is an important business for downtown, because it attracts customers in every demographic group, whether considering age, gender, or income,” Myrkle said.

Myrkle goes on to point out the historical significance of the theater, as a place that has been an important part of the community for many years.

“The Eaton Theatre is a contributing property to the National Register of Historic Places, and continues to play the same role in our community that it has now for many decades,” Myrkle said. “In that sense, it is living history.”

Cash Beechler started the Eaton Theatre in 1931. The 750-seat theater had a single screen at that time, and it was built in the ornate Art Deco style of that era. Considered top of the line, the theater enjoyed early success. Its first show was Whoopie starring Eddie Cantor.

In 1986, Rick Dedolph bought the theater from the Beechler family. A second screen was added in the old balcony in 1992, allowing the theater to show two different movies. Ownership transferred from Dedolph to his daughter, Sue McNeel around 2011. During approximately eighteen of those years, beginning in the early 2000s, Leann Owen was the manager of the theater. In 2018, Owen bought it and is currently the owner and operator.

Resilient in Adversity

Like all small, local businesses, the Eaton Theatre has had its share of challenges staying in business, competing with larger corporate-owned theaters, and keeping up with modern technology. Yet because of dedicated management and a supportive community, the theater has been able to persevere.

One significant challenge was the need to transition to digital projectors in 2013, a very large expense for a small theater. While financing options were available to larger theaters, then-owner Sue McNeel turned to the community for help. With community support and assistance from generous donations, McNeel was able to upgrade the projectors and keep the theater going.

The recent Covid-19 pandemic was perhaps the greatest challenge for not only the Eaton Theatre, but movie theaters in general. All movie theaters in Michigan were shut down for several months during 2020, and many of them never reopened their doors. However, with tenacity and love for the theater, Owen found ways to make the best of a difficult situation.

One of the ways she kept the theater afloat during the shut-down was by selling their well-loved popcorn to go. If people were going to be watching movies at home, at least they could enjoy some authentic movie-theater popcorn.

Made with special seasonings and high quality ingredients, Eaton Theatre popcorn holds a special place in Charlotte residents’ hearts and they are willing to go the extra mile to get it, even if it means buying it to go. In fact, the movie snacks to-go option has continued, even with the pandemic fading. Patrons can still buy popcorn and other concession snacks to go during business hours, with the option of curbside pickup.

Another proactive move was to take advantage of the pandemic closure and make some much-needed renovations to the historic building. In fact, Owen and her partner did much of the physical labor themselves.

“It was definitely a labor of love. We poured our sweat and tears into the work,” Owen said.

Updates included new carpeting throughout, new comfortable seats with foot stools and cup holders (so pop isn’t spilled), bathroom improvements, and a new marquee, made in the historic style. Patrons especially love the new seats and enjoy seeing the marquee lit up for the first time since the 1980s. Though the marquee and lights are new, they are made to look much like the original, creating a look full of old world glamor.

“The community really rallied during Covid,” Owen said. “People would stop by and buy popcorn to take home and add a donation at the same time.”

Owen is very thankful for the community support during the difficulties of the pandemic. In addition to the community support, Owen was able to secure some Covid relief financing for small businesses to help with the renovations and keep the theater in business during the shut-down.

Another modern challenge movie theaters have to contend with is online streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and others. Yet despite the popularity of these types of platforms, people still cherish the experience of going to a theater to see a movie. Watching a movie on a big screen with a group of other people offers a personal connection and communal experience that you just don’t get at home. In a theater, you laugh with others, you cry with others. And the beautiful setting of the theater just adds to the charm.

“There are certain movies that people just want to see on the big screen. And people come here to gather with their family and friends, to make memories. Movies allow people to get away from their problems for a while. I love to see their happy faces,” Owen said.

Connection to Community

The Eaton Theatre is more than just a business, it is an integral part of the Charlotte community. The community has always been supportive of the theater, and in turn the theater gives back to the community.

“When people think about the ideal downtown and what sort of things should be there, nearly everyone would include a movie theater,” Myrkle said. “As such, it is an amenity that signals the health of the community and attracts interest and investment.”

One of the ways the theater encourages community participation is by keeping the ticket prices affordable. At $6.50 per person, this price is below what most theaters charge per ticket, making it a great place to take the family to the movies without breaking the bank.

Another way the Eaton Theatre stays involved in the Charlotte community is by hosting community events. For example, there is a summer free movie series, with family-friendly movies showing on Thursday afternoons free of charge. Also, there are special holiday occasions to look forward to.

On the Monday before Halloween each year, Owen hosts a “Haunted Theater,” during the Halloween parade, where kids receive candy and take a ‘spooky’ tour. The free showing of the Polar Express is a fun Christmas tradition when children can wear their pajamas to the movie and receive a small bell to ring. Those are just a few examples of community events the theater offers as a way for residents to make precious memories in their own hometown.

As Charlotte’s Community Development Director, Myrkle is keenly aware of the importance the theater plays in the life of the community.

“The Eaton Theatre is the kind of local business that helps create a lasting connection between the community and its residents,” Myrkle said. “A theater is a place, and an experience, that residents remember and reminisce about.”

Operating a community movie theater is a lot of hard work and there is definitely stress involved in keeping it afloat through economic ups and downs. But for Owen, it is all worth it. All of her years as a manager and now owner, have given her rich experience to draw from and a fierce love of the historic building, the Charlotte community, and the role movies play in our lives.

“I grew up going to the movies and have always loved the experience,” Owen said. “It has been my dream to restore this theater and give the community a place to spend time together.”

Residents of Charlotte are fortunate to have this historic gem downtown. Woven into the fabric of the community, the Eaton Theatre offers not only great movies, affordable prices, and delicious snacks, but also a friendly atmosphere and beautiful setting.
