Across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, deer numbers are widely acknowledged to be too high. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) estimates the statewide deer population at roughly two million animals. While recent county-level figures are no longer published, the southern Lower Peninsula, including Eaton County, remains one of the most densely populated regions for deer in the state.

Several factors have contributed to this growth. Milder winters mean fewer losses to harsh weather. Suburban expansion has created edge habitat with plenty of food and cover. Predator numbers are low in most regions. But, perhaps the most significant factor is that the number of active hunters continues to decline, weakening one of the key management tools used to keep the herd in check.

WHY IT MATTERS

An overabundance of deer can have wide-ranging consequences for both people and the environment. On the ecological side, too many deer can damage forest understories and young tree growth, making it harder for native plants to regenerate. In agricultural areas, high deer populations can cause costly crop damage, destroy fences, and create daily frustrations for farmers and landowners.

The issue also extends to roadways. Michigan consistently ranks among the top states for deer-vehicle collisions, with more than 58,000 reported crashes in 2023 alone. Those accidents resulted in 1,725 injuries and 19 deaths. The cost of vehicle repairs, insurance claims, and hospital bills quickly adds up creating a burden that extends far beyond the rural landscape.

Declining hunter participation adds another layer to the challenge. In the early 2000s, Michigan had more than 800,000 deer hunters. Today, that number is closer to 525,000. Fewer hunters mean fewer deer harvested each year. Without that population control, herds can quickly outgrow available habitat, which increases impacts on both people and the environment.

DISEASE CONCERNS IN A CROWDED HERD

As deer numbers climb, so does the risk of disease. Overpopulation leads to closer contact among animals, making it easier for illnesses to spread. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) has caused periodic die-offs in parts of Michigan, especially during warm, dry summers when biting midges are active, and chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected in Eaton County.

While these diseases don’t pose a direct threat to humans, they highlight the importance of active herd management. Active management and testing help slow the spread and keep local herds healthier over time.

HOW THE RULES ARE CHANGING

Recognizing these pressures, the DNR has made several adjustments to its deer management strategy. Hunters are being encouraged to harvest more antlerless deer to help bring herd numbers back into balance. Landowners who experience damage to crops or landscaping can apply for special Deer Damage Shooting Permits to remove deer outside of regular hunting seasons.

For the 2025-2026 season, now underway, the DNR extended opportunities to hunt. Adjustments include expanded late antlerless firearm seasons, additional archery opportunities, and more flexibility during the muzzleloader season in certain areas. These changes are designed to give hunters more chances to participate while helping reduce the statewide deer population to healthier levels.

Mandatory harvest reporting, which requires hunters to log their deer within 72 hours of harvest, remains in place. The data collected from those reports will help the DNR better understand regional herd trends and measure the success of management efforts in real time.

ENCOURAGING THE NEXT GENERATION OF HUNTERS

Michigan’s deer herd has grown beyond what current hunter participation can manage. Hunting remains the most effective way to reduce deer numbers while supporting conservation through license revenue. Encouraging more people to participate, especially youth and those returning to the sport, is essential. Local clubs, landowners, and outdoor organizations can help by offering mentorship, access, and education that make hunting more approachable. Every successful harvest plays a part in reducing crop damage, curbing collisions, and restoring healthier habitat.

LOOKING AHEAD

Eaton County illustrates the larger story across Michigan: rising deer numbers, changing regulations, and growing concern about safety and land use. The new rules are an important step, but lasting progress will take participation from every corner of the community. Hunters, farmers, residents, and local officials all have a stake in managing an overpopulated herd. The challenge is not simply about reducing numbers but maintaining balance for healthy deer, safer roads, productive farms, and active hunting seasons.

New investments in health care are reshaping the region west of Lansing. With McLaren Greater Lansing’s new medical campus opening in phases in Delta Township and UM Health–Sparrow’s project underway in Oneida Township, Grand Ledge is emerging as a growing hub for modern, accessible care. By investing millions in the area’s medical capacity, these projects are at once large capital investments and community infrastructure upgrades.

“We’re very pleased that UM Health–Sparrow chose Oneida Township for their new mini hospital and we’ve appreciated how well their team has worked with us through our local zoning and permitting process,” said Rick Jones, Oneida Township Supervisor. “Having both UM Health–Sparrow and McLaren expanding medical services in the Grand Ledge area is a real benefit for residents.”

Both projects aim to make essential services easier to reach for area residents. For families in Grand Ledge, that means shorter drives for appointments, expanded options for urgent and emergency treatment, and new opportunities to stay within the community for specialized care.

MEETING THE NEEDS OF A CHANGING COMMUNITY

While the area has seen some moderate growth, especially in Delta Township, the need for more accessible care in the Grand Ledge area isn’t driven by population spikes, but by practical realities. An aging population, increased demand for chronic-disease management, and the everyday challenges of traveling for appointments have all made local access a growing priority.

Families want care that fits into their schedules, without having to travel long distances. Older adults want fewer barriers between them and their doctors. And providers recognize that offering those services close to home improves both patient satisfaction and better health outcomes.

WHY CLOSER CARE MEANS BETTER HEALTH

When health care fits into daily life, rather than being a logistical challenge, people are more likely to get it. Studies have shown that when patients have to drive long distances for appointments, they’re more likely to delay or skip preventive care, lab work, or follow-ups. Over time, those missed visits can mean conditions go undiagnosed or unmanaged until they become serious.

For residents of Grand Ledge, having full-service facilities just minutes away removes that barrier. Bloodwork can be done on a lunch break instead of taking a day off. Follow-up visits after surgery or illness are easier to keep. Parents can schedule a same-day urgent care appointment for a child without rearranging an entire day of work.

Local access also improves continuity of care, allowing patients to see familiar providers regularly while ensuring that primary doctors, specialists, and clinics can coordinate seamlessly. When the same clinic handles your annual physical, lab tests, and referrals to specialists, information flows more smoothly and treatment decisions are better coordinated. More consistency helps prevent medication errors, duplicated tests, and gaps in follow-up care.

In emergencies, shorter travel times can make an even bigger difference. Quick access to an emergency department reduces the time between symptom onset and treatment, especially for heart attacks, strokes, and injuries where every minute counts. McLaren’s new freestanding ER will cut that travel time dramatically for residents in Grand Ledge and surrounding areas.

Ultimately, these new facilities make it possible for more people to stay proactive about their health and get faster care when urgently needed. Together, that leads to earlier diagnoses, fewer complications, and a stronger, healthier community.

McLAREN GRAND LEDGE

The path to better access has already started to unfold as McLaren Grand Ledge became the earliest of the two projects to open its new medical campus on Saginaw Highway, just west of Nixon Road. The facility began a phased opening on October 6 with primary care, cardiology, general surgery, and a lab draw station for quick, convenient testing.

Then, on October 20, a landmark moment for the community arrived when McLaren opened a 24-hour freestanding emergency department, the closest round-the-clock emergency care available to Grand Ledge residents. Looking ahead, McLaren plans to expand services to include oncology through the Karmanos Cancer Network, allowing patients to receive cancer treatment and follow-up care closer to home.

“Our selection of the Delta Township location was fundamentally driven by the area’s growth and the clear need for more accessible, comprehensive health services for the Delta Township/Grand Ledge community,” said Austin Holcomb, Director of Corporate Construction Management. “We have maintained close collaboration with Delta Township officials throughout the planning and development process to ensure this facility aligns with the community’s future. Ultimately, the McLaren free-standing ER and medical services building improves healthcare outcomes by dramatically reducing travel times for emergency services, ensuring timely and convenient access to care when it is needed most.”

UM HEALTH–SPARROW

Just a few miles away in Oneida Township, construction is underway on UM Health–Sparrow’s new health center also along Saginaw Highway, west of Sundance Chevrolet. Scheduled to open in 2027, the project will bring together primary and urgent care, imaging, lab work, and pharmacy services in one location, creating a setup designed for convenience and efficiency.

Beyond its advanced medical services the project is also innovative in its sustainable approach to construction. It’s being built to meet LEED certification standards, which means using energy-efficient systems, sustainable materials, and natural light to reduce environmental impact and create a healthier setting for patients and staff alike.

“This new facility is a direct response to the growing needs of this community. The site in Oneida Township will offer a wide range of comprehensive services, including urgent care, laboratory, retail pharmacy, primary care, specialty care, outpatient rehab and advanced imaging and cardiology services,” said Connie O’Malley, regional chief operating officer, University of Michigan Health. “By centralizing these essential services in a modern, accessible location, we are removing barriers and ensuring that highquality health care is a convenient reality for families in and around Grand Ledge. This project is a cornerstone of our commitment to building a statewide network of care.”

BUILDING A STRONGER LOCAL ECONOMY

Beyond improving access to care, these projects are shaping the community’s economic future. The new medical campuses are bringing hundreds of jobs in health care, administration, and support services. These positions attract professionals and families who want to live close to where they work.

Modern health facilities also make Grand Ledge more appealing to new residents and employers who view access to quality care as part of a community’s overall quality of life. These investments strengthen the local tax base, support small businesses, and send a clear message that Grand Ledge is a place with long-term stability and opportunity.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome McLaren Greater Lansing’s new Ambulatory and Emergency Care Facility to our community,” said Fonda J. Brewer, Delta Township Supervisor. “This facility has brought safe, timely, and important emergency services, as well as preventive medical care, right to our own backyard. The ambulatory service is already assisting our own Fire Department by significantly decreasing the number of runs into Lansing, allowing our team to decrease response times and lessen the amount of time it takes for each ambulance to return to service. At a time when many families are navigating barriers to quality care, McLaren’s investment brings trusted healthcare closer to home and strengthens our community’s well-being.”

A FULL RANGE OF LOCAL SERVICES

Together, McLaren Greater Lansing and UM Health–Sparrow represent a shift in how health care is delivered. Rather than asking residents to travel into Lansing for routine visits or follow-up tests, they are bringing care directly into the community. With specialists, urgent care, and emergency services all nearby, these projects close a long-standing gap in local access and make it easier for residents to manage their health without added travel or time away from work and family.

In the process, they’re creating more than medical buildings; they’re creating lasting infrastructure for a healthier, more resilient community. Their combined investments help to ensure that Grand Ledge is a place where people can live well, work confidently, and feel safe, knowing essential services are available and closer than ever before.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook just how important it is to feel truly connected to others. We rush through busy schedules, manage multiple responsibilities, and interact more through screens than in person. Nonetheless, people are increasingly expressing a desire for belonging, meaning, and authentic community.

Research confirms what many instinctively know: human connection is essential to both emotional and physical health. The U.S. Surgeon General has identified loneliness and isolation as urgent public health concerns, linked to higher rates of heart disease, anxiety, and cognitive decline.

A Harvard University decades-long study on adult development found that meaningful relationships are the strongest predictor of lifelong happiness and well-being. Their findings reinforce a powerful truth: we are healthiest and happiest when we feel part of something larger than ourselves.

Across the country, more people are rediscovering that sense of connection in local community groups, especially service clubs. These organizations create opportunities not only to volunteer but to build lasting friendships and support networks. In towns like Grand Ledge and nearby Delta Township and Lansing, long-standing chapters of Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, and Optimists continue to play a vital role in bringing people together.

In Grand Ledge, the commitment to service shows up in lasting, hands-on efforts that make a real difference. It’s the kind of steady, behind-the-scenes work that not only helps meet local needs, but also creates a rhythm of service and camaraderie among members.

“Grand Ledge Lions Club has been serving the community since 1944 and volunteers at several local events such as Music in the Park, Ledges Classic Car Show, and the Blue Oval Blast Car Show,” said Brandi Bauer, a longtime member of the club. ”We run concessions with the continued support of A&W. We couldn’t do it without them.”

Proceeds from the concession stand help to fund many of the different projects the Grand Ledge Lions Club supports. Service clubs in Grand Ledge, Delta Township, and Greater Lansing raise funds to give money back to nonprofits, student school programs, shelters, food banks, and other nonprofits. In Grand Ledge, projects include Adopt-A-Highway clean ups, high school scholarship programs, Blessings in a Backpack, and Music in the Park. In fact, the Rotary of Grand Ledge provided $90,000 in matching funds for the Jaycee Park Rotary Club Stage that was completed in 2020.

Yet these clubs are more than their fundraisers, meetings or projects. They offer a place where neighbors become friends, where ideas are shared and put into action, and where members work side by side to strengthen the community. From coordinating food drives to organizing youth programs or local beautification efforts, service clubs give people the chance to make a difference and feel connected in the process.

Sociologist Robert Putnam, in his widely cited book Bowling Alone, documented the steady decline in civic engagement over the past several decades. He warned that when people stop participating in group activities, trust and cooperation begin to fade. Fortunately, this decline is not irreversible. Communities that invest in connection can become stronger, more resilient, and more vibrant.

For anyone feeling isolated or searching for a way to get more involved, attending a local service club meeting can be a simple but powerful first step. These gatherings are welcoming spaces where all are invited to contribute, learn, and belong.

By joining or supporting local service clubs, we don’t just give back, we reconnect. We build friendships, deepen our roots, and remind ourselves that we’re not alone. At a time when so many people are quietly searching for a deeper connection, local service clubs offer a path forward.

“The Grand Ledge Rotary Club truly exemplifies how service organizations form the backbone of our communities,” said Ariel Backus, Grand Ledge Rotary Club president. “Through their quiet yet consistent dedication, they weave a vital tapestry of support, compassion, and progress that touches lives across Grand Ledge.”

If you, a family member, or a friend is looking for more purpose, connection, or a fresh start, a local service club can be a meaningful place to begin. What starts as a simple step often leads to lasting relationships, a renewed sense of purpose, and the feeling of truly being at home. And, it’s not just a nice feeling, research shows that people who feel connected to others tend to be healthier, more resilient, and more satisfied with life.

When we build community, we also build strength — emotional, physical, and collective. Service clubs offer more than fellowship by helping people and communities thrive and by reminding us that connection isn’t just good for the soul, it’s vital for our well-being.

Meet Local Service Clubs

A look at four major organizations serving our community and the world.

Each of these clubs contributes to the well-being of Grand Ledge, Delta Township, or the greater Lansing area and invests in its future through a variety of community service projects, by hosting family-friendly events, and by awarding scholarships to area high school students each year.

Kiwanis International

Kiwanis has been serving children and communities since 1915. With 537,000 members worldwide across 85 countries, Kiwanis clubs contribute more than 18.5 million hours of service annually. Kiwanis clubs focus on improving the lives of children through service, education, and leadership development. Their projects range from sponsoring reading programs and school supplies to supporting food pantries and youth sports. Visit kiwanis.org.

Cost-Effective Projects Buyers Will Love

The real estate market in 2026 is predicted to be both exciting and competitive, with buyers looking for homes that are not only move-in ready but also offer value and charm. For homeowners preparing to sell, making strategic, cost-effective upgrades can significantly enhance your property’s appeal and ensure a strong return on investment (ROI). Buyers tend to make decisions based on emotion and practicality, so it’s crucial to strike the right balance between aesthetics, functionality, and value.

From enhancing curb appeal with simple landscaping to refreshing your kitchen and bathrooms with budget-friendly updates, these projects are certain to make a big impact. Modern flooring, energy-efficient improvements, and opening up spaces can make your home feel more inviting. A fresh coat of paint, updated lighting, and strategic staging will further elevate your home’s appeal, ensuring it’s market-ready and irresistible to potential buyers.

First Impressions Matter Most

Imagine pulling up to your home for the first time. What do you notice? The curb appeal is your home’s handshake — it’s the first thing buyers see and often sets the tone for their entire tour. Enhancing your exterior doesn’t have to mean major landscaping overhauls. Start with the basics depending on the season, like mowing the lawn, raking leaves, or keeping the snow shoveled. Keeping the outside neat and tidy creates a lasting first impression.

In spring and summer, plant colorful flowers, add native plants that require minimal upkeep, and freshen up garden beds with mulch. Ideas you can do year round to add inviting touches include: installing solar-powered pathway lights, painting the front door a welcoming color like navy blue or deep red, and replacing worn-out house numbers or mailboxes. Freshly painted shutters and trim can also enhance the overall appearance of your home, making the exterior look well-maintained and polished. These affordable updates invite buyers to step inside and can deliver a high ROI.

“People become blind to small repairs that need to be made around their home, such as torn weather stripping around a garage door or chipped and peeling trim,” said Steven Eyke, owner at LaFollette Custom Homes. “Walk through your home with a fresh set of eyes. Have a friend visit who hasn’t been over for awhile and have them point out things that need fixing or updating.”

The Heart of the Home

Buyers love kitchens — it’s the space where families gather, meals are shared, and memories are made. But kitchen renovations don’t have to mean tearing everything out and starting fresh. Focus on smaller, impactful updates:

• Cabinet Facelift: Repaint cabinets in a fresh, neutral color like white or light gray and replace hardware with modern handles or knobs

• Backsplash Upgrade: Install a timeless subway tile backsplash or a budget-friendly peel-and-stick option for a quick refresh

• Fixture and Appliance Refresh: Swap out old faucets, light fixtures, or even a dated range hood with sleek, modern alternatives

These updates can give your kitchen a whole new look without the hefty price tag. Also doing a thorough job cleaning, decluttering, and organizing can make your kitchen more appealing to potential buyers.

“Open the refrigerator, microwave oven, and cupboards, and make sure they are clean. People want to know a home was well taken care of,” said Amy Kruizenga, realtor at Vision Real Estate. “A house that is neat and clean, first and foremost, sells.”

Relaxing Retreats

Bathrooms are second only to kitchens in importance to buyers. Simple touches that are cheap and easy to make, only requiring a bit of elbow grease, and can create a clean, relaxing atmosphere.

Brighten up tile and bath room fixtures by cleaning or replacing caulk and existing grout lines. Replace your towel bars and install modern faucets and showerheads. Add a spa-like feel by replacing an old mirror with one framed in wood or metal. Replace dim lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting above the vanity. Creating a fresh, updated bathroom can make your home feel more luxurious without requiring a full remodel.

Say Goodbye to Carpets

Flooring has a major impact on how buyers perceive a home. Current buyers are drawn to durable, eco-friendly options like luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or engineered hardwood. These materials are affordable, stylish, and easy to maintain — ideal for busy families or pet owners.

If you’re dealing with worn-out carpets, consider replacing them in key living areas with updated flooring options. Even refinishing hardwood floors can provide an excellent ROI, making your home feel fresh, modern, and move-in ready.

Appeal to the Eco-Conscious Buyer

As sustainability continues to dominate conversations, energy efficiency is no longer a “nice-to-have” but a must-have for many buyers. Making your home greener can be as simple as sealing windows and doors to prevent drafts, upgrading to a smart thermostat, and replacing old lightblubs with energy-efficient LEDs.

For a bit more investment, consider adding attic insulation or upgrading to Energy Star-rated appliances. Not only will you attract environmentally conscious buyers, but you’ll also be able to highlight lower utility costs — an attractive feature for any homeowner.

Create Open and Functional Spaces

Buyers are looking for homes that feel spacious and versatile. If your home has small or awkward rooms, consider opening things up by removing non-load-bearing walls to create an open-concept living area. Rearrange furniture to maximize flow and natural light. Stage spaces like a home office or gym to demonstrate their potential. Even small changes, such as decluttering and removing oversized furniture, can transform a room and make it feel larger.

Illuminate the Possibilities

Never underestimate the power of paint and good lighting. A freshly painted, neutral-color can make any space feel larger, cleaner, and more inviting. Popular and versatile shades include warm whites, soft beiges, and gentle grays. These hues not only appeal to a broad audience but also allow buyers to envision their personal style in the home.

Bright, well-lit spaces feel more welcoming and spacious. Replace dim or outdated fixtures with modern designs and add smart bulbs or dimmers for versatility. Provide additional lighting in key areas like the kitchen, bathrooms, and living room to showcase your home.

Declutter, Clean, and Stage for Success

Perhaps the most cost-effective way to prepare your home for sale is to declutter, deep clean, and stage it to highlight its best features. Remove personal items, excess furniture, and anything that might distract from the home’s potential.

Hiring a professional stager can be an excellent investment, but do-it-yourself staging with carefully chosen furniture and decor can work just as well. Make each room feel functional, inviting, and ready for buyers to imagine themselves living there.

“Everyone runs out of time and has a list of projects that they want to get done before putting their home on the market,” said Kruizenga. “By contacting a real estate agent early in the process, you can make better decisions about where your effort and money will make the most sense.”

What Buyers Want

This year, buyers are looking for homes that feel modern yet timeless, eco-friendly, and adaptable to a range of lifestyles. Showcasing spaces that are functional, energy-efficient, and move-in ready is key to making a strong impression. Having a friend who can give you an honest opinion of repairs that need to be done and working with a real estate agent early in your process can help you decide where to focus your time and attention.

Selling your home in 2026 doesn’t have to mean pouring thousands of dollars into renovations. By focusing on strategic, cost-effective updates, you can create a home that buyers will fall in love with while maximizing your ROI. With a little effort and a clear plan, your home will stand out in the competitive market and have buyers lining up to make an offer.

Maximize Savings: Energy Rebates and Incentives for Homeowners

Lower your energy bills and make your home more eco-friendly with these valuable rebates and programs.
By: Teresa Miller

With energy prices climbing and the effects of climate change becoming more apparent, it’s more important than ever for homeowners to find ways to save on their energy bills while reducing their environmental footprint. Thankfully, there are several energy rebate programs available to homeowners in Michigan that can help you make your home more energy-efficient without breaking the bank. Through a variety of rebates offered by utility companies, as well as state and federal programs, you can upgrade your home, reduce your environmental impact, and lower your monthly costs.

REBATES FROM CONSUMERS ENERGY

When upgrading an existing home or building a more energy-conscious home, the rebates from Consumers Energy can significantly lower the initial expense of switching to a more efficient HVAC system and appliances.

Appliance Rebates

Thinking about replacing an old appliance? You can earn rebates by choosing ENERGY STAR® certified appliances, including refrigerators, clothes washers, and dishwashers. These appliances are designed to use less energy, which means you’ll save both on the initial cost through the rebate and over time with lower utility bills.

HVAC Rebates for Heating and Cooling Upgrades

If you’re looking to upgrade your heating and cooling system, now might be the perfect time. Consumers Energy offers rebates for energy-efficient furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps. Upgrading to these high-efficiency systems can make a noticeable difference in both comfort and energy savings.

Insulation and Window Rebates

Poor insulation or old windows can lead to high heating and cooling costs. Consumers Energy offers rebates for upgrading insulation and installing energy-efficient windows, which can help maintain a more consistent indoor temperature and reduce energy usage.

Smart Thermostat Rebates

For a relatively simple and effective upgrade, consider installing a smart thermostat. Consumers Energy offers rebates for these devices, which allow you to control your home’s heating and cooling more efficiently, even when you’re not home.

Water Heaters

High efficiency water heaters are designed to use less energy while still providing reliable hot water for your home. Whether you’re upgrading to a tankless model or an ENERGY STAR® certified conventional unit, Consumers Energy’s rebates make it more affordable to switch to a system that can reduce your energy consumption and lower your utility bills.

“A typical rebate from Consumers Energy is $100 to $200; rebates are tiered depending on the efficiency of your installation,” said Pam Austin of Austin Heating & Cooling in Dimondale, Michigan. “Customers should know that approximately six weeks after we submit an application for our clients, a paper check will be mailed to the person listed on the account with Consumers Energy.”

According to Austin, there are other rebate programs available through DTE, HomeWorks Tri-County, Lansing BWL, and the Michigan Propane Commission. However, most homeowners in Michigan are Consumer Energy customers. Also rebates only apply to new construction if it is a whole-home project. You should work with your builder to get all the details on the potential rebates for a new home.

STATE OF MICHIGAN FINANCING

Michigan Saves

If you’re planning larger energy-saving projects, Michigan Saves could be a great resource. This nonprofit program offers low-interest financing for energy-efficient home improvements. From adding insulation to installing solar panels, Michigan Saves makes it easier for homeowners to tackle energy-efficient upgrades.

Unlike some traditional loans, Michigan Saves financing doesn’t require you to use your home equity as collateral. This makes the program accessible to more homeowners, including those who might not qualify for other types of financing. Michigan Saves works with a network of approved contractors who specialize in energy-efficient projects and meet the standards required to offer Michigan Saves financing.

Michigan Propane Commission

Established to promote propane use and safety, the Michigan Propane Commission (MPC) supports energy-saving initiatives across Michigan. Their rebate programs aim to make propane a more affordable and eco-friendly option for heating and other household needs, helping residents transition to cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.

The MPC rebates are available to homeowners for installing high-efficiency propane appliances like furnaces and water heaters, as well as for adding or replacing propane storage tanks. By taking advantage of these incentives, homeowners can lower their energy costs and enhance the comfort and efficiency of their homes.

FEDERAL REBATES AND TAX INCENTIVES

Federal Rebates Through the Inflation Reduction Act

Michigan homeowners can also benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act, which offers federal rebates for a range of energy-efficient home improvements. These rebates cover projects like installing high-efficiency electric appliances, heat pumps, and whole-house energy upgrades. It’s a great option if you’re considering significant energy-saving investments.

Are Federal Rebates Tax Write-Offs?

While federal rebates help reduce the cost of energy-efficient upgrades, they are not tax write-offs. These rebates are direct incentives that reduce the upfront cost of energy-efficient installations.

However, there are federal tax credits, like the Residential Clean Energy Credit, that allow you to claim a percentage of the costs for certain energy-saving improvements, such as solar panel installations. These tax credits can be applied when filing your taxes to directly reduce your tax bill. Combining rebates and tax credits can result in significant savings for homeowners making energy-efficient upgrades. It’s always a good idea to consult a tax professional or review IRS guidelines to ensure you’re taking advantage of any relevant credits or deductions.

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH ENERGY REBATES

Many HVAC, window, insulation, and solar contractors will handle the rebate application process for you as part of their service. Be sure to ask your contractor if they can assist with applying for any available rebates.

“We provide information about any potential rebates with our estimates,” said Austin. “Since it can be confusing for homeowners, we will fill out the application and provide all of the necessary documentation for rebates on behalf of our customers.”

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer or you want to explore your options, follow the instructions provided for eligibility and application steps. Each program may have different application processes.

Step 1 Check Out Available Rebates: Look into the rebates offered by Consumers Energy and other programs to find out which ones apply to your planned home upgrades.

Step 2 Purchase and Install the Products: Buy the energy-efficient products and have them installed.

Step 3 Submit Your Application: Complete the application process with the necessary documentation, including receipts and proof of installation.

Step 4 Receive Your Rebate: Once approved, you’ll receive your rebate as a check or credit on your energy bill.

MAXIMIZE YOUR HOME’S EFFICIENCY AND SAVINGS

Michigan homeowners have excellent opportunities to make their homes more energy-efficient and save money through a variety of rebate programs. Whether you’re upgrading appliances, improving insulation, or installing a smart thermostat, these programs make it easier and more affordable to invest in energy-saving improvements. Talk with your contractors and visit program websites (see the article in the sidebar on the previous page) to learn more and get started today!

When the air begins to cool and our mid-Michigan days shorten, we shift our energy toward activities that align with the changing seasons. Grand Ledge’s vibrant community is always looking to stay active and engaged. In a time when our lives are as busy as ever, community engagement and extra-curricular activities play a crucial role in shaping the lives of our young people.

Beyond the classroom, these activities provide invaluable opportunities for growth, development, and connection. Youth sports, dance, karate, 4H programs, and other local activities promote physical health and skill development, as well as fostering a sense of community and belonging. As young people participate, they build lasting relationships, develop important skills, and gain confidence that can last a lifetime. Our future remains bright when active minds are given the opportunity to shine.

GRAND LEDGE COMMUNITY RECREATION

When we look at our community recreation programs we see the work of Jen Daly, Community Recreation Coordinator, Grand Ledge Schools. Daly started the programs back in 2016 without a budget or equipment, and over time her hard work paid off. Today, Grand Ledge Community Recreation offers a total of 36 programs, ranging from youth soccer and football to wrestling and cheer.

“We help make Grand Ledge an amazing place to live, work, and play,” said Daly. “Our well-organized programs draw people in from all over, including outside of our community.”

Our many athletic fields and parks provide excellent venues for members of the community to engage with their neighbors and with those visiting from outside the area. Many people who visit our community, for sporting events or other activities, find Grand Ledge to be a place where they would like to live.

“Families are looking for the full package when they are deciding on where to live, and I believe our Community Recreation Department is a key component to that,” said Daly.

THE IMPACT OF YOUTH SPORTS

Youth sports are more than just a way for children to stay active, they are a cornerstone of community engagement and personal development. Participation in sports helps children build physical fitness, learn teamwork, and develop a strong work ethic. All of these benefits extend well beyond the actual sport, influencing many aspects of personal growth and social interaction. When we consider the health and future of our community, a solid foundation built on youth engagement is crucial.

A modest beginning in the youth sports programs in Grand Ledge gave way to an explosion of interest and growth. This expansion is clear evidence of our need to continue fostering these activities.

“When I started Spring Soccer in 2016 we had just over 100 participants,” said Daly. “This past spring season, 2024, we had 996 participants, 78 teams and more than 100 volunteer coaches.”

Watch for updates to the recreation programs on the Grand Ledge Comets website and social media, as well as at our local schools. Dates, schedules, and associated costs of the various activities are all listed for the public. The funds that support our youth athletic programs are provided by the registration fees, which Daly does her best to keep as low as possible. Higher enrollment allows the program to lower costs for everyone.

“It’s important that we continue to offer affordable programs and not increase the prices to the point where families can’t participate,” adds Daly.

Engaging in sports offers many benefits for young people, enhancing their physical health, mental resilience, and social skills. Physically, it promotes well-being, helping children maintain a healthy weight and develop coordination. Mentally, our community sports programs teach valuable life skills such as discipline, perseverance, and strategic thinking. Equally important is the impact that participation has on their social lives. Engaging in a team environment encourages communication, teamwork, and leadership. Many of these relationships blossom into friendships that last a lifetime.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extra-curricular activities like dance, karate, 4-H, and art offer unique benefits that complement or provide alternatives to traditional sports. These activities contribute to physical fitness, foster creativity, require discipline, and improve self-confidence.

Dance

Dance is a powerful force of self-expression and physical development. It encourages flexibility, coordination, and strength while also nurturing creativity and emotional growth. The sense of accomplishment and community created through dance is transformative and the art of dance is sewn into the fabric of our culture.

Local dance studios provide children and young adults with the opportunity to explore various dance styles from ballet to hip-hop. The programs often culminate in live performances that give students a chance to showcase their skills while gaining valuable self-confidence.

“When my oldest daughter discovered competitive dance in high school, she developed her passion and strong work ethic, and it gave her purpose outside of academics,” said Amy Hoyes, Grand Ledge Chamber of Commerce Executive Director and longtime community resident. “She is now a junior in college and still dances in a company, and she also teaches classes at the same Grand Ledge studio where she was once a student.”

The impact of dance can last for generations to come. The family environment that our local programs provide goes beyond the steps, the moves, and the hours of practice. Local dance instructor and owner of Rising Star, Lori Arendsen, has been enriching our community for over 40 years.

“So many have shared with me that dance was an important part of their young lives, so much so that they are now bringing their children to dance with us,” said Arendsen. “We have the next generation growing up in our classrooms, and it is beyond special. Our young people find a home away from home with their dance family.”

Karate

Karate is an ancient martial art that focuses on self-discipline, respect, and physical fitness. It teaches children and people of all ages, discipline, self-defense skills, and mental focus. Local and nearby karate schools offer structured programs that help students build confidence, physical endurance, and mental resilience.

Through regular practice and training in karate, students gain technical skills and valuable life lessons. The supportive environment helps individuals learn to overcome challenges and to develop the discipline required to accomplish their goals.

Youth Development through 4-H

The term “4-H” stands for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. These represent the organization’s focus on developing character, practical skills, and physical well-being. Started over 100 years ago, 4-H emphasizes hands-on learning and education by providing young people with opportunities to harness their skills. By developing these talents, young people go on to create and manage projects in their local communities.

Many people believe 4-H is only for kids who live on farms or are interested in raising and selling animals, but that’s not the case! 4-H, the largest youth development organization in Michigan, offers a wide variety of topics and activities for all interests. Locally, the Eaton County 4-H program is part of Michigan State University Extension’s Youth Development efforts, and it’s open to all youth ages 5 to 19.

4-H is run by dedicated volunteers and offers engaging programs that span a wide range of interests, from science and technology to clothing and textiles. These programs provide fun and educational experiences, equipping young people with lifelong leadership skills and laying the groundwork for their future success.

The Art of Crafting for Young Minds

Crafting offers young people a unique way to express their creativity and develop valuable skills. By engaging in hands-on projects, children and people of all ages enhance their fine motor skills and attention to detail. These skills build confidence and improve problem-solving abilities. Crafting helps nurture well-rounded individuals by blending fun with learning, and offers a positive way for young people to connect with their community and discover their passions.

A local nonprofit formed in 1974, Ledge Craft Lane is an art cooperative that has been shaping the Grand Ledge community for more than 50 years. Its local crafting programs provide a supportive environment where you can explore various techniques—from painting and pottery to sewing and jewelry-making. Activities like these foster a sense of accomplishment and encourage imaginative thinking.

“Ledge Craft Lane provides art classes for all ages in its retail store downtown while also hosting the second longest-running art fair in Mid-Michigan,” said Stephene Lapp, Ledge Craft Lane’s current President. “Come be creative with us in classes and workshops for beginners and experienced artists alike.”

A Bright Future Through Community Engagement

From the wide range of programs offered by Grand Ledge Community Recreation to the creative outlets provided by local dance studios, karate, and 4-H clubs, our community provides many opportunities to continue the growth and development of our young people. Crafting programs further brighten our community by offering avenues for creativity and personal expression.

By participating in these programs, children and teenagers gain the skills and confidence needed to develop a sense of belonging and strong attachment to our community. As families and community members, supporting these local activities creates an investment in a brighter future for our children. Together, we build a foundation where every young person has the opportunity to develop, contribute, and shine in our thriving community.

Owning a home is a dream for many, and turning that dream into reality requires careful planning and smart financial decisions. Financing your first home can be a complex process, but with the right knowledge and steps, you can navigate the journey with confidence. In this article, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to make your homeownership dreams come true.

Step 1: Assess Your Financial Health

Before you dive into the world of mortgages and loans, it’s crucial to assess your current financial situation. Start by reviewing your credit score, as it plays a significant role in determining your eligibility for a mortgage and the interest rates you’ll be offered. Obtain a credit report from a reputable agency and address any discrepancies or issues.

Next, calculate your debt-to-income ratio, which is the percentage of your gross monthly income that goes toward paying debts. Lenders often use this ratio to evaluate your ability to manage monthly payments. Aim for a ratio below 43%, as it is generally considered a healthy benchmark.

Step 2: Set a Realistic Budget

Once you have a clear understanding of your financial health, establish a realistic budget for your home purchase. Consider your current expenses, future financial goals, and potential changes in income. Your budget should not only cover the mortgage but also factor in property taxes, homeowners’ insurance, maintenance costs, and potential homeowners association fees.

Take advantage of online calculators to estimate monthly mortgage payments based on different loan terms and interest rates. This will give you a better idea of the price range you can comfortably afford.

Step 3: Save for a Down Payment

One of the most significant financial hurdles for first-time homebuyers is the down payment. While some loan programs allow for lower down payments, saving as much as possible can open up more options and reduce the overall cost of your mortgage.

Experts recommend aiming for a down payment of at least 20% of the home’s purchase price to avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI) and secure better loan terms. Create a dedicated savings account for your down payment and explore government programs or employer-sponsored assistance that may help you save more efficiently.

Step 4: Explore Mortgage Options

With your finances in order and a down payment in the works, it’s time to explore mortgage options. There are various types of mortgages, each with its own advantages and considerations. Common options include fixed-rate mortgages, adjustable-rate mortgages, FHA loans, and VA loans.

Compare interest rates, loan terms, and closing costs from different lenders to find the best fit for your financial situation. Don’t hesitate to consult with mortgage professionals who can provide personalized advice based on your needs.

“Our primary focus is on education. We can evaluate your financial circumstances early in the process, discuss how to enhance your credit, and help you select the most suitable mortgage option,” said Kaitlyn Beno, a Mortgage Loan Originator at Fifth Third Bank. “Many people don’t have a 20% down payment, and while there are various programs available to assist, our role is to guide you in choosing the mortgage that best fits your specific needs.”

Step 5: Get Pre-Approved

Once you’ve identified a suitable mortgage option, seek pre-approval from your chosen lender. This involves providing detailed financial information and undergoing a credit check to determine the maximum loan amount you qualify for.

“Obtaining a pre-approval letter not only strengthens your position when making an offer on a home, but it also clarifies your budget, ensuring you focus on homes within your financial reach,” said Beno. “It’s crucial to avoid spending time considering properties that are beyond your budget.”

Step 6: Find the Right Home

Armed with a pre-approval letter and a solid understanding of your budget, you can start the exciting journey of finding your dream home. Work with a real estate agent who understands your preferences, and explore neighborhoods that align with your lifestyle and future plans.

Consider the long-term aspects of a property, such as its resale potential, school districts, and proximity to essential amenities. Don’t hesitate to attend open houses, ask questions, and gather as much information as possible before making a decision.

Step 7: Putting in an Offer

When buying a home, making your offer stand out to sellers is crucial, especially in competitive markets. It can be discouraging when houses are selling for thousands of dollars over asking price and many are all cash offers. Even if you don’t have cash, but are preapproved for a mortgage, there are other ways to strengthen your offer.

“You might waive contingencies like the home inspection, be flexible on closing dates, or give more earnest money,” said Stacee Robison, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “Some more creative ways include an escalation clause or an appraisal gap guarantee.”

An escalation clause in your offer can automatically increase your bid in response to competing offers, ensuring you don’t overpay yet remain competitive up to a maximum limit. Additionally, including an appraisal gap guarantee is a commitment that you will cover any difference between the offer price and a lower appraised value, providing reassurance to sellers that the sale will proceed as planned. Using these strategies can significantly enhance your offer’s attractiveness to sellers, potentially making the difference in securing your dream home.

Step 8: Navigate the Closing Process

Once you’ve found the perfect home and your offer has been accepted, it’s time to navigate the closing process. This involves finalizing the mortgage, completing a home inspection, and ensuring all necessary paperwork is in order.

Review the closing costs carefully and be prepared to cover expenses such as attorney fees, title insurance, and property taxes. Work closely with your real estate agent and mortgage lender to ensure a smooth and successful closing.

Homeownership Awaits

Financing and buying your first home may seem like a daunting task, but with careful planning and the right steps, you can turn your homeownership dreams into reality. Assess your financial health, set a realistic budget, save for a down payment, explore mortgage options, get pre-approved, find the right home, put in a competitive offer, and navigate the closing process. By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to unlocking the door to your dream home and enjoying the many benefits of homeownership.

Whether you’re a longtime resident or a visitor passing through Downtown Grand Ledge, there’s a buzz of excitement in the air. As evidenced by the presence of orange construction barrels and fences, a transformation is underway this summer with an infrastructure project called the Grand Renovations for Downtown Grand Ledge (GRDGL).

The project aims to substantially improve the amenities and walkability of Downtown Grand Ledge. With aesthetic as well as safety concerns being addressed, the city is poised to emerge as a vibrant hub where community, commerce, and creativity can thrive year-round.

The GRDGL initiative is set to enhance the traditional streetscape and public gathering areas spanning from Scott Street to Main Street and along West River Street. The City of Grand Ledge was one of ten Michigan communities awarded $1 million in grant funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) through their Revitalization and Placemaking Program (RAP).

The RAP initiative strives to bolster downtown businesses within the tourism, travel, and hospitality-related sectors that were significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The city leveraged the grant funds as gap financing to support an estimated $3.9 million infrastructure project within the downtown’s central business district.

When the project is completed, the downtown will have revamped sidewalks, accented by stamped colored concrete, decorative bollards, and vibrant pops of color from the raised planter beds brimming with greenery and blooms. The sprucing up includes the replacement of the Ginkgo Biloba as well as new tree grate frames, where needed. New bike loops and recycling receptacles will be located throughout the downtown.

It’s not just about improving the appearance of the downtown; safety and accessibility are also top priorities. Features, such as sidewalk bumpouts and a mid-block crosswalk will improve pedestrian access. Plus, the city is installing removable bollards on River Street, allowing for flexible use of the space while ensuring safety for everyone.

With Grand Ledge hosting many parades and events, the community will certainly make use of the planter boxes throughout the downtown that will provide additional seating. Also, along River Street, the city is creating an additional gathering spot with a patio seating area, picnic tables with umbrellas, and a solar charging station. Spectators will be able to enjoy sporting events at a new and improved Fitzgerald Field, where new stairs will allow easier access to bleacher seating and terraced lawn seating.

On Front Street the deck is being expanded and a new railing installed. Additional thoughtful amenities such as shade trees, another solar charging station, a water station with a dog bowl, and new public restroom that will be open year round, will make this venue even more welcoming.

As the project progresses, the city is ensuring that everyone stays informed by sharing timelines and an interactive map on their website. The construction is being done in phases to minimize disruption to local businesses and downtown traffic. Whenever available, parking in public lots and the use of alternative business entrances is encouraged.

Throughout the construction period, crosswalks will be preserved using temporary gravel surfaces until new ramps are installed. Pavement resurfacing is being coordinated with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). For further details on street closures and tentative dates, please visit www.cityofgrandledge.com/412/Grand-Renovations.

The transformation happening in downtown Grand Ledge is not just a facelift but a reimagining of the core of our community. As the GRDGL project unfolds, it promises a vibrant, safer, and more accessible environment, which will undoubtedly enhance the quality of life and benefit local businesses. Keep an eye on the ongoing developments and get ready to enjoy our downtown’s bright new chapter.

Deciding on a career path is a significant decision, but if you’re inclined towards hands-on work that yields immediate, tangible results, the skilled trades are worth considering. These professions are not just jobs; they are critical roles that keep society running smoothly and offer personal fulfillment, financial stability, and numerous other benefits. Students in the any Eaton County school district may embark on a journey in pursuing a career in the skilled trades in a variety of programs available through Career and Technical Education (CTE).

Benefits of the Skilled Trades

Pursuing a career in the skilled trades can be a smart, rewarding decision. Skilled trades people are always in high demand due to the essential nature of their work, which includes construction, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and more. The persistent need for these skills means that job security in this sector tends to be robust.

Variety, a sense of accomplishment, and financial considerations contribute to high job satisfaction in many of the skilled trades. Working in a trade often means no two days are the same. The work can involve different locations, varied projects, and unique challenges, which keeps the workday interesting and dynamic. There is a unique satisfaction that comes from crafting or repairing something with your own hands. Additionally, skilled trade jobs often offer competitive salaries that are comparable to or even exceed those of jobs requiring a four-year college degree.

“Since most skilled trades require vocational training or apprenticeships rather than a four-year college degree, individuals can enter the workforce sooner and with significantly less student debt,” said Vlad Lebedintsev, Assistant Superintendent for Career & Technical Education at Eaton Regional Education Service Agency (Eaton RESA). “Many students have the ability to earn a good income after graduation from a CTE program by going into the workforce, into an apprenticeship, or other advanced learning programs in their industry.”

Other financial advantages for skilled trades people include the opportunity to work overtime and the opportunity for advancement. Skilled trades people can advance in their careers by increasing levels of certification and specialization, by moving into management and supervisory roles, or by going into business for themselves.

Spotlight on the Skilled Trades

For those who prefer active, engaging work environments over desk jobs, skilled trades provide the opportunity to work with their hands, solve practical problems, and see tangible results. Here are just a few of the fields available in the skilled trades:

Electrician: Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power systems in homes, businesses, and factories, ensuring that electricity is safely and efficiently brought to every device that needs it.

Plumber: Plumbers install and repair pipes and fixtures that carry water, gas, or other fluids in residential and commercial settings. They are critical in designing systems that effectively manage water and waste.

Carpenter: Carpenters construct and repair structures, buildings, and homes. Some work as builders, others as remodelers, or they may also build custom furniture and cabinetry.

HVAC Technician: HVAC technicians work on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings. Some work in commercial buildings and others service or install equipment in homes.

Welder: Welders use equipment to join metal parts, fixing and fabricating metal structures, tools, and vehicles across a variety of industries. Welding requires a steady hand and precise attention to detail.

Heavy Equipment Operator/Mechanic: Heavy equipment operators work with large machinery and vehicles used in construction, mining, agriculture, and other industries. They also need to know how to maintain, and repair heavy equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and loaders.

Automotive Technician/Mechanic: Automotive technicians diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicles. They work on engines, transmissions, brakes, and other mechanical and electrical systems.

Empowering Students to Build a Bright Future

From electricians wiring up our world to plumbers ensuring our water runs smoothly, skilled trades people are the backbone of our infrastructure. But how does one get started in this fulfilling line of work? High school CTE programs serve as a launching pad, providing students with the practical skills, industry connections, and career readiness needed to thrive in the trades.

CTE programs provide students with hands-on experience and exposure to various occupations, helping them discover their passions and strengths. Juniors and Seniors at any Eaton County High School who are going into the skilled trades attend high school for a half day, then they attend a skilled trades CTE program for a half day at the Lansing Community College (LCC) West Campus or at AIS Construction Equipment in Lansing. Training at these locations includes construction, welding, mechanical engineering, heavy equipment operation, or automotive trades.

“The hands-on nature of our CTE programs keeps students engaged and invested in their education, resulting in higher on-time graduation rates than the statewide average,” said Lebedintsev. “Through these experiences, students not only gain high school credits, but also industry certifications that set them up for success in their chosen trades.”

From using tools to mastering technical knowledge, students gain practical skills directly applicable to the workforce. Through Eaton RESA’s partnerships with local businesses and professionals, these programs offer networking opportunities and real-world insights. Each program helps to prepare students for immediate employment and further education. Some offer industry-recognized certifications.

Transitioning from Classroom to Career

With a solid foundation from CTE programs, students seamlessly transition into the workforce or pursue advanced training. Armed with practical skills, industry connections, and a clear career path, they can enter careers in the skilled trades, shaping the world around them one project at a time.

“I’ve been working on my apprenticeship at Liskey’s Auto & Truck Service for the past four months,” said Talon Richey, a senior at Grand Ledge High School. “This experience is amazing and I love learning and applying what I did at Eaton RESA/LCC. I know that I can always get a job in this field and I really enjoy making money!”

Choosing a career in the skilled trades isn’t just about finding a job—it’s about pursuing an occupation that offers stability, satisfaction, and meaningful impact. High school CTE programs serve as the first step on this journey, empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and connections needed to succeed in the workforce. Whether you’re wiring circuits, welding metal, or building structures, the world of skilled trades awaits—ready to welcome you into its ranks.

The summer of 2023 will mark a very special milestone in the history of the Grand Ledge Island Art Fair. As one of Michigan’s longest running arts and crafts shows, this event has become a mainstay of Grand Ledge life and a testament to the creative energy of its residents.

At the end of July, over 150 arts and crafts vendors from all over the state of Michigan will converge on Island Park for the 50th Annual Island Art Fair. This event, free and open to the public, gives visitors an opportunity to view art and meet artists, all in a beautiful island setting.

In addition to the unique, quality work by artists and artisans, this juried art fair features live music and delicious food. To mark the event’s 50th anniversary, visitors will be treated to special festivities this year, though exactly what those elements will be, remains a surprise.

Stephene Lapp, Director of the Island Art Fair, does not want to spoil the surprise by divulging too many details about the 50th anniversary celebration, but we can be sure this year will have some extra fun features.

“What I can tell you for sure, is that we are going gold for the 50th anniversary and it is sure to be glittering and illuminating,” Lapp said.

In addition to celebrating the 50th year milestone, Lapp said it is the annual traditions, like the ribbon-cutting ceremony that officially opens the art fair, that give the event a timeless appeal.

“People look forward to the ribbon-cutting every year, and it wouldn’t feel like the Island Art Fair without opening it with this ceremony,” Lapp said.

The first Island Art Fair was held in 1973 with only 25 vendors, who had no tents or tables, just products on the grass. After the first successful fair, Marilyn Smith and her group of friends opened Ledge Craft Lane to offer artists a space to sell their arts and crafts all year long.

The first fair was such a hit that it continued year after year, with the number of vendors growing annually. There are now over 150 vendors who come from all over the state of Michigan for this exciting day-long event. The number of visitors has increased over the years as well, swelling to approximately 6,000 visitors each year.

Demand to take part in the Island Art Fair is high. Vendors must apply and be approved by a six-member jury in order to secure a spot. The jury process is intended to keep the quality of the artwork high and also ensure there is a wide range of work from different categories.

Dedicated Volunteers Make This Beloved Event a Success

The Island Art Fair could not happen without the help of a hard-working Director and a group of amazing volunteers. These dedicated volunteers are the backbone of Ledge Craft Lane and the Island Art Fair.

Lapp, who is also President of Ledge Craft Lane, follows in the footsteps of Ledge Craft Lane founder Marilyn Smith in carrying the torch for the arts in Grand Ledge. Lapp is enthusiastic and passionate about the arts in her community. For Lapp, part of that positive aspect includes the unique and scenic location of the Island Art Fair.

“We do this because we love art and we want to give people a positive space to look at art,” Lapp said. “Where else can you have an art festival on an island? It’s a beautiful setting and an uplifting atmosphere. We love to share that with people.”

In fact, Lapp’s connection to the Grand Ledge arts scene began when she started showing her own artwork at Ledge Craft Lane in 2017. From then, her work with the volunteers of Ledge Craft Lane and the art fair bloomed into a fulfilling job that would progress from Office Manager to President of Ledge Craft Lane and Director of the art fair. She works year-round to coordinate all the tasks that make the Island Art Fair an annual success, and continues to create and show her own art as well.

In addition to Lapp’s year-round work, the art fair would not be possible without a group of highly capable volunteers who work together year after year.

“We are like a family. With lots of experience, they know how to make the event run smoothly, like a well-oiled machine,” Lapp said.

Over 500 volunteers have helped at the Island Art Fair in the last 49 years. Lapp would like to give a shout-out to some of the special people who make this event a success year after year. The list includes Dave & Pat Finnie, who are still around after more than twenty years of volunteering.

In addition, she would also like to thank volunteers who head the committees who hold things together, including Annette Ryan, Chair of Food & Beverage; Cindy Langenberg, Chair of Information; Ginny Balgoyen; Chair of Signage; Corinne Edgecomb, Chair of Traffic; and Kelly Waterman, Chair of Music. Each chair has a hard working crew to help them out, bringing the total number of volunteers to between 40 and 60 each year.

Since this art fair takes place on an island, it is important to have the logistics in place in order for everyone to enjoy the day. With just one pedestrian bridge to get on and off of the island, it is like a highly choreographed dance to get all the vendors set up on the island and then make it possible for the 6,000 plus people to visit the air fair.

However, this group of dedicated volunteers has been making it work for 50 years, so they know a thing or two about what it takes to make this event run smoothly.

“The ‘I Love My City’ group took over traffic duties for the event in 2021 and they do a fantastic job of taking care of the vendors and getting their art transported to the island, all with a smile and kind words,” Lapp said.

For visitors, there are three large parking lots where people can park and ride a free shuttle bus to the island. The Immanuel Lutheran Church, United Methodist Church, and Neff parking provide free parking to visitors, where they can catch shuttle buses that run regularly to and from the island.

Lapp is proud of the fact that the Island Art Fair is known among art vendors as a favorite, because of how well they are treated by the volunteers. From helping vendors with parking and transportation to sending runners to bring them lunch, the volunteers make sure the vendors are comfortable.

Woodworker Ted Prinz has been a vendor at the Island Art Fair for over 10 years and has seen his share of art fairs in other locations.

“This art fair is the crown jewel. Among the best shows I’ve ever come across,” Prinz said.

All of this good will between the Director, volunteers, the artists, and visitors contributes to the positive atmosphere that people associate with this event.

Art Is a Force That Brings People Together

The work you will find at the Island Art Fair ranges from fine art, authors, paintings, handmade soaps, pine needle art, stained glass, jewelry, unique tote bags, clothing, ceramics, woodwork, and much much more. And no need to worry about packing food, you will not go hungry at this event. Plenty of food booths offer locally made food and cool beverages for your refreshment.

Prinz’s work includes skillfully crafted items such as wooden pens, pepper grinders, and turned wood bowls. He has noticed that people really enjoy coming out to look at all the different artwork and talk to the artists in-person, and his bowls have been of particular interest in recent years.

“Wood is tactile, and people love to touch the bowls to get a feeling of the smooth quality of the wood,” Prinz said. “When it comes to finding something unique, you can’t beat the Island Art Fair.”

Several musical performers add to the festive atmosphere, including Eugenia Arens, who has been playing the accordion for art fair visitors for over 45 years. It is something she looks forward to every year, and she does not let a little bad weather stop her.

“One year we put garbage bags on because it was raining so hard,” Arens said. “We cut out holes for our heads, covered our instruments, and went ahead and played our music. That was so much fun.”

Arens’ enthusiasm is inspiring. She says it’s the people who keep her coming back every year to play music.

“They are always interested in the music we are playing. It’s a really great atmosphere,” Arens said.

To Director Lapp, art is a special bond that draws people together.

“It is the older generation teaching the younger generation to create beauty and work with their hands,” Lapp said. “It is this personal connection between artists and visitors that makes this art fair a memorable experience.”

If you are looking for quality original artwork, a beautiful island setting, a day spent outside eating good food and listening to live music, or all of the above, you can find it at the Island Art Fair in Grand Ledge.

“We are here to give people gifts and memories, things they will treasure for the rest of their lives,” Lapp said. “It means so much to us, because each item is personal, made by our own hands .”

The 50th Island Art Fair is on July 29th, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you are interested in being a vendor, please inquire at ledgecraftlane@juno.com.

In addition, local artists offer art classes year-round in a room on the ground floor of the building, which used to be the town’s city hall.

The building that houses Ledge Craft Lane is historic. Dating back to 1885, it was originally the Grand Ledge Fire Hall.
