Darrell’s Market & Hardware, A Mason Legacy

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, Darrell’s Market & Hardware marked a spectacular milestone: its 80th Anniversary Celebration. More than just a local store, Darrell’s has been a constant, beating heart in Aurelius Township, near Mason, MI, evolving through eight decades and four generations.

THE CORNERSTONE: A $7,500 DREAM

The story of Darrell’s Market began as World War II ended and the “Golden Age” of independent grocers was dawning. In 1945, Darrell Gavin, a seasoned grocery store manager, and his wife Lyla, purchased a property at the corner of Aurelius and Columbia Roads. For the bargain price of $7,500, they acquired a grocery store, a gas station, an acre of land, and a three-bedroom house — a true all-in-one homestead.

Darrell and Lyla settled in, raising their family, including step-son Jim Blauvelt and younger children Bill and Eileen, in the house attached to the business. This commitment, living where they worked, established a legacy of personal investment that would define the market for generations.

THE SECOND GENERATION’S CALL

Tragedy struck in 1957 when Darrell unexpectedly passed away after a stroke. The future of the small market rested on the shoulders of second-generation Jim Blauvelt. Jim returned home from college and a spot on the MSC (later known as Michigan State University) football team, married his high school sweetheart Pat Holtz, and dedicated himself to the family business and supporting his mother and siblings.

Under Jim and Pat’s leadership, the market grew and adapted. In the face of competition from large chains like Kroger and Meijer, they took a leap of faith. They joined the “Thriftway Super Markets” alliance in 1961 for buying power and, in 1975, moved across the street to a large “New Store” built on land they had purchased in 1963. They later became independent and successfully combined groceries and a hardware store in one location — a service mix that proved invaluable.

GENERATIONS OF DEDICATION

Terry Blauvelt (son) and Jamie Robinson (daughter), the third generation, were working full-time in the stores, raising their families in Mason and learning the trade when the community’s deep bond with the store was dramatically tested in 1992. A major fire, starting in the middle of the night, devastated the building. The impact was heartbreaking, but the response was immediate and overwhelming. Neighbors, customers, and employees showed up in force, volunteering countless hours to help the family clean up and re-open.

It wasn’t just a business that burned; it was a fixture in the community, and the outpouring of support cemented the store’s place as a true pillar of Mason. After the fire, Jamie, along with her husband Scott, stepped into ownership in the mid-1990s, carrying forward the tradition of service and resilience.

THE LEGACY CONTINUES

The next chapter began in 2020 when Jared Browers, Scott and Jamie’s son, took over day-to-day operations, ensuring the market’s survival through the challenging pandemic era with the help of many dedicated, long-term staff members. Today, as a fourth-generation-run independent store, Darrell’s remains a living testament to the grit and community focus that started with a $7,500 purchase 80 years ago.

Looking ahead, Jared is focused on honoring the store’s heritage while positioning it for the future. He plans to create more community-centered events, many of them built around the growing presence of Nuts & Bolts Café inside the hardware store. From casual gatherings to seasonal celebrations, he sees the café as a natural hub for bringing neighbors together.

A GRAND REUNION

The 80th Anniversary Celebration on September 27, 2025 was the ultimate employee and community party. Many of those who had walked through the doors, worked behind the counter, or supported Darrell’s over the past eight decades joined in the festivities.

The night started with an employee reunion where past and present employees came together to share memories and catch up with old friends. Attendees were treated to a custom made ‘80’ cake by local anchorman David Andrews and a special “sweethearts” photo station that honored all of the couples who meet their spouses among the aisles. The Mason Chamber of Commerce also held a ribbon cutting to honor Darrell’s as a founding chamber member along with their 80 years in business.

Throughout the evening, the ‘Decades of Customers and Their Rides’ car exhibit delighted guests with decade specific modes of transportation, from 1940 to 2026, on display by actual Darrell’s customers. The Sea Cruisers band, a local (and Darrell’s) favorite, played music from the store’s first 40 years. Guests boogied to music from the 50s to the 70s, filling the dance floor in front of the band and making every toe tap. Another local band, The Pocket, covered classic rock from the 60s to the 2000s, bringing the party into the 21st century and closing out the night.

While they danced and partied, guests were able to grab dinner or a snack from Holt based food truck, Two Guys Nomadic Grill, and a complimentary ice cream treat from Darrell’s freezer. The newest addition to Darrell’s, Nuts & Bolts Cafe, located inside the hardware store, provided guests with beer, wine, cocktails, and specialty coffee drinks throughout the night.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

The partnership with local businesses and groups has been a founding principal of Darrell’s since the beginning and was again put into practice for the 80th anniversary party. The following individuals and businesses helped make this event a success:

Benjamin Schartow

David Andrews

Delux Tents Mid Michigan

Lollybean

Mason Area Chamber of Commerce

North Aurelius Elementary School

SDVisuals

Sea Cruisers

Shaheen Cadillac

Sohn Linen

Supreme Sanitation

The Pocket

Two Guys Nomadic Grill

The incredible and talented staff of Darrell’s Market & Hardware

Eighty years after Darrell and Lyla first opened their doors, the market that began as a modest homestead stands as one of Mason’s most enduring local treasures. Its story is woven from hard work, family commitment, and a community that has shown up time and again.

As Darrell’s Market & Hardware steps into its next chapter, the spirit that carried it through fires, expansions, and changing times remains the same: a promise to serve, support, and stay rooted in the place it calls home. Here’s to the generations who built it, the neighbors who believe in it, and all the memories still to come.

Growing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

How FFA Shapes Students in Mason and Dansville
By: Teresa Miller

The blue corduroy jacket has become a familiar sight in classrooms, barns, and auditoriums across the country, and here in Mid-Michigan it represents far more than an agriculture club. For students, FFA becomes a place to discover their strengths, practice teamwork, develop communication skills, and feel connected to a supportive community. Here in Ingham County, Mason and Dansville have two vibrant chapters that show exactly how meaningful that experience can be.

A NATIONAL MISSION WITH LOCAL HEART

The National FFA Organization, once known as the Future Farmers of America, officially updated its name in 1988 to reflect its wider focus on science, business, technology, natural resources, and leadership. The letters FFA remain as a nod to the organization’s heritage, but today its broader mission is preparing students for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success.

At the national level, FFA aims to “make a positive difference in the lives of students” by helping them build leadership skills, confidence, and real-world experience. That mission comes to life through classroom learning, career exploration, leadership training, and active involvement in local chapters.

MASON FFA: LEADERSHIP, PERSONAL GROWTH, AND COMMUNITY

At Mason High School, students not only join FFA to learn about agriculture, but they also find a place where they can lead, build friendships, and uncover new strengths. Members take part in leadership contests, chapter meetings, fundraisers, the co-op plant sale, and various community activities that help shape them into capable young leaders.

“The Mason FFA organization offers a variety of opportunities and services that not only offer premiere leadership development, but encourage it,” said Alex Cargill, Mason FFA student and the chapter’s Vice President.

Mason FFA students also learn through personal experiences working as a team, taking responsibility for projects, and discovering their own abilities along the way. The chapter places a strong emphasis on real-world learning.

“Every activity in Mason FFA encourages students to grow into responsible, passionate young leaders who are ready to make a difference,” said Matthew Albrecht, Mason FFA Advisor and Agriscience teacher.

Classes in Zoology, Botany, and Agricultural Leadership provide a foundation in both agriculture and career skills, while the co-op program, plant sale, and leadership conferences give students meaningful opportunities to apply what they’ve learned. But for many members, the greatest impact comes from the relationships they build.

“Success in FFA isn’t just about winning trophies, it’s about the relationships you make,” said Emma Whipple, Mason FFA student and the chapter’s Reporter. “Truly winning is walking into the room during a chapter meeting and seeing a bunch of smiling faces ready to greet you. If you ever think about joining FFA, do it! You not only gain life skills but also friends that will last a lifetime.”

DANSVILLE FFA: HANDS-ON LEARNING AND AGRICULTURAL EXPLORATION

The Dansville FFA Chapter blends leadership development with an impressive range of hands-on agricultural experiences. In Zoology and Botany classes, students learn by producing apple cider, raising broiler chickens for competition, tending plants in potting sheds and hydroponic systems, farrowing sows, and collecting sap to make maple syrup. These experiences give students a real understanding of the agricultural industry, whether they come from farming families or have never set foot on a farm.

“Dansville is the perfect place to find talented young people who will be the future leaders of the agricultural industry,” said Mike Sheridan, Dansville FFA Advisor and Agriscience teacher. “Whether students grow up on a farm or not, here in Dansville, they understand the importance of agriculture.

Outside of class, the chapter’s activities give students even more space to learn and lead. They participate in Ag Olympics, travel to Indianapolis for the National FFA Convention, compete in leadership development events like public speaking and conduct of meetings, and take part in career development events such as floriculture and livestock judging. They also attend the Michigan FFA State Convention on the campus of Michigan State University, which is a highlight for many students. Dansville’s officer team plays an important role in guiding the chapter, and each officer carries real responsibilities.

“What I get out of being part of FFA is the opportunity to learn as not only a leader but as a member of our community,” said Philomena Mayr, Dansville FFA student and the chapter ‘s President. “FFA teaches you a lot of skills that we can apply to everyday life. I have made new friends and met all kinds of amazing people through the FFA.”

WHERE GROWTH TAKES ROOT

Though FFA operates on a national scale, its deepest influence happens in local chapters like Mason and Dansville where students discover their voice, find mentors, and gain confidence through hands-on learning. Whether students are building leadership skills in Mason or gaining real-world experience in Dansville, both chapters show how FFA creates opportunities for young people to grow, explore their interests, and prepare for life beyond high school.

Across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, deer numbers are widely acknowledged to be too high. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) estimates the statewide deer population at roughly two million animals. While recent county-level figures are no longer published, the southern Lower Peninsula, including Eaton County, remains one of the most densely populated regions for deer in the state.

Several factors have contributed to this growth. Milder winters mean fewer losses to harsh weather. Suburban expansion has created edge habitat with plenty of food and cover. Predator numbers are low in most regions. But, perhaps the most significant factor is that the number of active hunters continues to decline, weakening one of the key management tools used to keep the herd in check.

WHY IT MATTERS

An overabundance of deer can have wide-ranging consequences for both people and the environment. On the ecological side, too many deer can damage forest understories and young tree growth, making it harder for native plants to regenerate. In agricultural areas, high deer populations can cause costly crop damage, destroy fences, and create daily frustrations for farmers and landowners.

The issue also extends to roadways. Michigan consistently ranks among the top states for deer-vehicle collisions, with more than 58,000 reported crashes in 2023 alone. Those accidents resulted in 1,725 injuries and 19 deaths. The cost of vehicle repairs, insurance claims, and hospital bills quickly adds up creating a burden that extends far beyond the rural landscape.

Declining hunter participation adds another layer to the challenge. In the early 2000s, Michigan had more than 800,000 deer hunters. Today, that number is closer to 525,000. Fewer hunters mean fewer deer harvested each year. Without that population control, herds can quickly outgrow available habitat, which increases impacts on both people and the environment.

DISEASE CONCERNS IN A CROWDED HERD

As deer numbers climb, so does the risk of disease. Overpopulation leads to closer contact among animals, making it easier for illnesses to spread. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) has caused periodic die-offs in parts of Michigan, especially during warm, dry summers when biting midges are active, and chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected in Eaton County.

While these diseases don’t pose a direct threat to humans, they highlight the importance of active herd management. Active management and testing help slow the spread and keep local herds healthier over time.

HOW THE RULES ARE CHANGING

Recognizing these pressures, the DNR has made several adjustments to its deer management strategy. Hunters are being encouraged to harvest more antlerless deer to help bring herd numbers back into balance. Landowners who experience damage to crops or landscaping can apply for special Deer Damage Shooting Permits to remove deer outside of regular hunting seasons.

For the 2025-2026 season, now underway, the DNR extended opportunities to hunt. Adjustments include expanded late antlerless firearm seasons, additional archery opportunities, and more flexibility during the muzzleloader season in certain areas. These changes are designed to give hunters more chances to participate while helping reduce the statewide deer population to healthier levels.

Mandatory harvest reporting, which requires hunters to log their deer within 72 hours of harvest, remains in place. The data collected from those reports will help the DNR better understand regional herd trends and measure the success of management efforts in real time.

ENCOURAGING THE NEXT GENERATION OF HUNTERS

Michigan’s deer herd has grown beyond what current hunter participation can manage. Hunting remains the most effective way to reduce deer numbers while supporting conservation through license revenue. Encouraging more people to participate, especially youth and those returning to the sport, is essential. Local clubs, landowners, and outdoor organizations can help by offering mentorship, access, and education that make hunting more approachable. Every successful harvest plays a part in reducing crop damage, curbing collisions, and restoring healthier habitat.

LOOKING AHEAD

Eaton County illustrates the larger story across Michigan: rising deer numbers, changing regulations, and growing concern about safety and land use. The new rules are an important step, but lasting progress will take participation from every corner of the community. Hunters, farmers, residents, and local officials all have a stake in managing an overpopulated herd. The challenge is not simply about reducing numbers but maintaining balance for healthy deer, safer roads, productive farms, and active hunting seasons.

Buying a home is a major milestone and caring for your home is a long-term commitment. Beyond the monthly to-do lists and seasonal upkeep, every home has an ongoing cycle of maintenance. These bigger tasks don’t come around every year, but when they do, they matter.

If you’ve recently purchased a home in Mid-Michigan, or if you’re settling into one you’ve owned for years, it helps to understand the bigger picture of home maintenance. With some forethought and a little planning, you can stay ahead of wear and tear, protect your investment, and enjoy a home that’s comfortable and dependable for decades to come.

Keep in mind that Michigan’s climate plays a role in your home’s ongoing maintenance requirements. Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snowfall, and humidity all affect the lifespan of materials. What holds up in a dry southern climate may wear more quickly in Mid-Michigan.

Use Your Home Inspection as a Starting Point

When you bought your home, you likely received a professional home inspection. Many people set this report aside after the closing process, but it’s actually one of the most useful tools you have. That report tells a story about your home’s condition at the time of purchase. It includes the estimated age of major systems like your roof, furnace, and water heater, and often points out areas to watch.

Instead of treating it as a checklist for immediate repairs, think of your inspection report as a long-range maintenance guide. Look for notes like “monitor,” “showing signs of wear,” or “near the end of its lifespan.” Those clues help you plan what needs attention in the next five to ten years, and what might come up further down the road.

Think in Timeframes, Not Just Tasks

Some home projects are monthly or seasonal, but others show up on a longer cycle. By understanding when certain components of your home typically need replacement, you can avoid being caught off guard. You can also budget ahead for the bigger expenses that come with the aging of your home. While not exhaustive, the list below includes many of the larger maintenance items that arise over the long term. Be sure to check with your home inspection report or with local home services professionals for advice unique to your home.

Every 3 to 5 Years

Refresh mulch beds and amend compacted garden soil

Trim or reshape mature trees to prevent storm damage and maintain structure

Reseal decks and porches, especially wood surfaces

Touch up exterior paint on trim, doors, and other exposed areas

Inspect and touch up garage doors and thresholds

Every 5 to 10 Years

Reseal asphalt driveways

Repaint or restain wood siding and trim

Replace water heater

Refresh weather stripping and caulking

Refinish hardwood floors

Replace aging shrubs or perennials that have outgrown their space or lost vigor

Regrade yard or lawn areas where settling, erosion, or poor drainage develops

Remove invasive or dying trees that pose a risk to the home or utility lines

Every 10 to 20 Years

Replace roof shingles

Upgrade furnaces and air conditioners

Replace older windows

Repair or replace gutters

Replace major appliances

Within 20 to 30 Years or More

Replace original siding

Update plumbing or electrical systems in an older home

Address foundation or structural issues if needed

Replace or repair septic systems

Invest in major hardscaping updates such as patios, retaining walls, or walkways

Don’t Overlook Tree Maintenance

Landscaping often gets attention in the first few years of homeownership, but mature trees deserve special consideration as part of your long-term maintenance plan. Especially in Mid-Michigan, where storms, wet soil, and rapid tree growth are common, regular tree evaluations should be a part of your home maintenance schedule.

“Tree care isn’t just about reacting after damage is done — it’s about planning ahead,” said Justin Brummette, owner of Big Kid Tree Worx. “A tree that’s too close to a structure, showing signs of decay, or suffering from poor drainage can become a costly hazard. In Michigan’s fast-growing conditions, trimming every few years is essential.”

Brummette also notes that removing one tree can change the wind dynamics on your property. “Removing a tree might expose others to winds they’ve never faced before, so smart removal and maintenance matters. And if a tree does fall on your roof, insurance won’t step in until it’s gone and the roof is visible. So, act quickly, remove the tree, and get the roof tarped before more damage is done.”

It’s smart to schedule professional inspections and not delay when a tree is showing signs of distress. Proactive maintenance is always more affordable, and less stressful, than emergency removal after a storm.

Budgeting and Planning Ahead

Experts often recommend that homeowners set aside one to three percent of their home’s value each year for maintenance. One percent may be sufficient for newer homes or those in excellent condition, while older homes or those with deferred maintenance may require more than three percent.

Having a long-term maintenance fund can help you handle big expenses like a new furnace or roof without added stress. It also allows you to take care of things on your own timeline rather than waiting until something breaks.

Use the Right Materials and Methods

Proper maintenance isn’t just about keeping things clean or in working order. It’s also about using the right materials and following recommended care instructions. These choices can make future remodeling projects smoother and help you avoid costly surprises later.

“I highly recommend people to not use Murphy’s Oil Soap to clean their hardwood floors. Stick to the properly formulated wood floor cleaners,” said Nik Morehouse, owner of Morehouse Improvements LLC. “Contaminants from using the wrong cleaners can wreak havoc on the results when you have them refinished.”

Using the wrong products — like interior paint on exterior trim or construction adhesive in place of proper caulk — may seem minor, but they can cause long-term issues. Over time, these materials may peel, crack, or fail to hold up under changing conditions. Choosing the right products from the start helps protect your home and can save time, frustration, and money when it’s time to remodel.

Pride in a Home Well Cared For

A well-maintained home is more than a financial asset. It’s a place that feels safe, grounded, and comfortable. Planning ahead for long-term maintenance helps protect that feeling, while also preserving the structure and systems that keep your home running smoothly.

This approach is about being thoughtful, prepared, and proud of the way you care for your space. That includes using the right materials for the job, following proper guidelines, and making choices that support your home’s long-term health. You don’t need to tackle everything at once. Focus on what matters most right now, use your inspection report as a guide, and check in with your plan each year. The care you invest today helps your home remain strong, efficient, and inviting for many years to come.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook just how important it is to feel truly connected to others. We rush through busy schedules, manage multiple responsibilities, and interact more through screens than in person. Nonetheless, people are increasingly expressing a desire for belonging, meaning, and authentic community.

Research confirms what many instinctively know: human connection is essential to both emotional and physical health. The U.S. Surgeon General has identified loneliness and isolation as urgent public health concerns, linked to higher rates of heart disease, anxiety, and cognitive decline.

A Harvard University decades-long study on adult development found that meaningful relationships are the strongest predictor of lifelong happiness and well-being. Their findings reinforce a powerful truth: we are healthiest and happiest when we feel part of something larger than ourselves.

Across the country, more people are rediscovering that sense of connection in local community groups, especially service clubs. These organizations create opportunities not only to volunteer but to build lasting friendships and support networks. In towns like Mason, long-standing chapters of Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, and Optimists continue to play a vital role in bringing people together.

In Mason, the commitment to service shows up in lasting, hands-on efforts that make a real difference. It’s the kind of steady, behind-the-scenes work that not only helps meet local needs, but also creates a rhythm of service and camaraderie among members.

“Mason Kiwanis has been sponsoring the Red Cross blood drive every eight weeks for 67 years,” said Elaine Ferris, a longtime member of the club. “We take care of everything— setup, staffing, and takedown. Right now, it’s held at the Methodist Church on the first Thursday of even-numbered months while St. James Church is under renovation.”

Yet these clubs are more than their meetings or projects. They offer a place where neighbors become friends, where ideas are shared and put into action, and where members work side by side to strengthen the community. From coordinating food drives to organizing youth programs or local beautification efforts, service clubs give people the chance to make a difference and feel connected in the process.

Sociologist Robert Putnam, in his widely cited book Bowling Alone, documented the steady decline in civic engagement over the past several decades. He warned that when people stop participating in group activities, trust and cooperation begin to fade. Fortunately, this decline is not irreversible. Communities that invest in connection can become stronger, more resilient, and more vibrant.

For anyone feeling isolated or searching for a way to get more involved, attending a local service club meeting can be a simple but powerful first step. These gatherings are welcoming spaces where all are invited to contribute, learn, and belong.

“You come to help others, but you end up helping yourself too,” said Doug Klein, a member of the Mason Lions Club. “There’s nothing like working together toward something that matters.”

By joining or supporting local service clubs, we don’t just give back, we reconnect. We build friendships, deepen our roots, and remind ourselves that we’re not alone. At a time when so many people are quietly searching for a deeper connection, local service clubs offer a path forward.

If you, a family member, or a friend is looking for more purpose, connection, or a fresh start, a local service club can be a meaningful place to begin. What starts as a simple step often leads to lasting relationships, a renewed sense of purpose, and the feeling of truly being at home. And, it’s not just a nice feeling; research shows that people who feel connected to others tend to be healthier, more resilient, and more satisfied with life.

When we build community, we also build strength— emotional, physical, and collective. Service clubs offer more than fellowship by helping people and communities thrive and by reminding us that connection isn’t just good for the soul, it’s vital for our well-being.

Building the Future Together: Mason’s Commitment to Education

A Journey of Transformation and Community Commitment
By: Christine MacIntyre

In Mason, where the community’s heart beats in time with its schools, decisions aren’t just about numbers—they’re about building a future. When it came to securing the future of Mason Public Schools, the community was at the forefront of the decision-making process. Residents were faced with a choice: invest in a bond to bring long-lasting improvements or look for alternative funding options.

Unlike a tax increase that generates revenue gradually over time, a bond allows the recipient to borrow money up front which the community repays over time, usually through property taxes. It allows immediate large-scale projects, like renovating schools, while spreading the financial responsibility over the years.

All it took was for Mason residents to vote “yes” to pass the $69.7 million bond proposal in the November 2017 election. It wasn’t about dollars and cents but forward thinking on behalf of the students attending Mason Public Schools. The bond started the process of a multi-year renovation plan to revitalize the Mason Public Schools (MPS) district, including facilities improvements, technology advancements, and safety and security.

“Our success is a testament to the strong relationship and connection between the district and our community,” said Mason Board of Education President Christopher Mumby. “Together, we were able to create modern, safe, and inspiring spaces that foster learning and growth.”

Undeniably Bulldogs, the Mason community in its strong spirit and proactive approach, has shown a deep commitment to its schools. This investment reflects a shared vision for the future. It highlights the close-knit relationship between the community and its schools, much like the sturdy brick-and-mortar buildings that provide a haven for its children. It’s a place where deep-rooted traditions, the warmth of familiar faces, and the intertwining of historical roots with the promise of the future are evident. In Mason, every street tells a story, and every person contributes to the rich tapestry of this welcoming town. It’s a place where belonging is a feeling and a way of life.

It’s been a remarkable road from the bond’s approval to the nearly completed projects. Over the past several years, the district has been humming with activity, with construction workers, architects, and teachers working side by side to make the community’s dreams a reality.

Steele Elementary School Transformation

The most dramatic is Steele Elementary School, which was once a building barely large enough to house 21st-century education. Now, after adding almost 55,000 square feet, the school expanded its physical footprint and the possibilities for learning within it.

“The transformation at Steele is a shining example of our progress and what is possible,” said Steele Elementary Principal Craig Kueffner. “Instead of worrying about inadequate space and up-to-date technology, staff members can focus on teaching and learning in new and dynamic spaces where students thrive.”

Classrooms that were once crowded and outdated are now spacious, bright, and equipped with the latest educational resources. In addition, the playgrounds and outdoor spaces are inviting. Steele Elementary is no longer an outdated place of education; instead, it’s a new model of modern learning where the environment invites curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

Elementary Building Makeovers

The bond allowed for changes across the board—Alaiedon Elementary, North Aurelius Elementary, Steele Elementary, and the Harvey Education Center all received improvements inside and out.

Elementary buildings saw updated cafeterias and gymnasiums, replaced and improved mechanical,
plumbing, lighting, heating and cooling, and interior remodeling, complete with new furniture and equipment. Elementary campuses also saw reconstructed and improved site circulation for bus loops and pick-up and drop-off areas.

Other improvements aren’t quite so visible but are no less critical. Modern, energy-saving alternatives have replaced the district’s aging mechanical, plumbing, and lighting systems. At the high school, steam boilers were replaced with new hot water heating systems and with air conditioning—a blessing in Michigan’s late-summer humidity.

Thanks to the bond’s passing in 2017, transformed gymnasiums reverberate with the sounds of physical education classes, and chatter fills the cafeteria as students enjoy lunch in a vibrant space. At the same time, new door locks with visual indicators help students and staff in each classroom feel safe, while secure entry vestibules provide an added layer of security at the entryways of each building.

Technology for the Future

In today’s digital age, technology is a cornerstone of education, and Mason Public Schools has embraced this reality wholeheartedly. With bond funds, the district has purchased and deployed new, state-of-the-art IT equipment across all schools. From interactive displays to student laptops and tablets, the technology in Mason’s classrooms now matches the ambitions of its curriculum.

The district also significantly expanded its wireless capacity, ensuring every student and teacher can access the internet. This connectivity has opened up new learning opportunities, allowing students to explore the world from their desks, collaborate on projects in real time, and access resources that go far beyond the walls of their schools.

Safety and Security

The final construction phase, completed this fall, is the capstone that follows years of planning and implementation and focused on creating safer learning environments for students. Secure entries were installed in each of the buildings which include welcoming, but secure, front doors, separate vestibules and updated offices to increase security and safety for students, parents and staff. In addition, classrooms are now equipped with door locks and visual indicators that clearly show whether they are locked or unlocked.

A Community’s Commitment

“The progress we’ve made over the past seven years is nothing short of remarkable,” said Mason Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gary Kinzer. His words resonate deeply within the community. Mason’s journey from outdated facilities to modern, secure, and inspiring learning environments reflects community commitment and its shared vision.

The support from Mason’s voters has made all of this possible. It reflects a community that understands the importance of education and is willing to invest in its future. The improvements funded by the bond are not just about buildings or technology—they are about creating a nurturing environment where students can thrive, teachers can teach effectively, and families feel connected to their schools.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future

The 2023-2028 Strategic Plan outlines Facilities and Infrastructure as a key focus area, ensuring that Mason Public Schools continue to evolve and improve. Plans are in place for a new bond offering in 2025, which will help fund further upgrades and keep the district at the forefront of educational excellence.

“We can see the positive impact of the updated learning spaces in our elementary buildings, and we hope to gain support from the community to continue improving infrastructure and facilities across the district, including at Mason Middle School and Mason High School,” said Kinzer. “Maintaining excellence and working to improve is a challenge, but it’s even more challenging to remain in the same place.”

Mason’s educational renaissance is far from over. With each new improvement, the district is not just keeping pace with the times—it is setting a standard for what a community can achieve when it comes together with a shared purpose. The journey from 2017 to today is a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and community. As Mason Public Schools looks to the future, one thing is clear: the best is yet to come.

Cost-Effective Projects Buyers Will Love

The real estate market in 2026 is predicted to be both exciting and competitive, with buyers looking for homes that are not only move-in ready but also offer value and charm. For homeowners preparing to sell, making strategic, cost-effective upgrades can significantly enhance your property’s appeal and ensure a strong return on investment (ROI). Buyers tend to make decisions based on emotion and practicality, so it’s crucial to strike the right balance between aesthetics, functionality, and value.

From enhancing curb appeal with simple landscaping to refreshing your kitchen and bathrooms with budget-friendly updates, these projects are certain to make a big impact. Modern flooring, energy-efficient improvements, and opening up spaces can make your home feel more inviting. A fresh coat of paint, updated lighting, and strategic staging will further elevate your home’s appeal, ensuring it’s market-ready and irresistible to potential buyers.

First Impressions Matter Most

Imagine pulling up to your home for the first time. What do you notice? The curb appeal is your home’s handshake — it’s the first thing buyers see and often sets the tone for their entire tour. Enhancing your exterior doesn’t have to mean major landscaping overhauls. Start with the basics depending on the season, like mowing the lawn, raking leaves, or keeping the snow shoveled. Keeping the outside neat and tidy creates a lasting first impression.

In spring and summer, plant colorful flowers, add native plants that require minimal upkeep, and freshen up garden beds with mulch. Ideas you can do year round to add inviting touches include: installing solar-powered pathway lights, painting the front door a welcoming color like navy blue or deep red, and replacing worn-out house numbers or mailboxes. Freshly painted shutters and trim can also enhance the overall appearance of your home, making the exterior look well-maintained and polished. These affordable updates invite buyers to step inside and can deliver a high ROI.

“People become blind to small repairs that need to be made around their home, such as torn weather stripping around a garage door or chipped and peeling trim,” said Steven Eyke, owner at LaFollette Custom Homes. “Walk through your home with a fresh set of eyes. Have a friend visit who hasn’t been over for awhile and have them point out things that need fixing or updating.”

The Heart of the Home

Buyers love kitchens — it’s the space where families gather, meals are shared, and memories are made. But kitchen renovations don’t have to mean tearing everything out and starting fresh. Focus on smaller, impactful updates:

• Cabinet Facelift: Repaint cabinets in a fresh, neutral color like white or light gray and replace hardware with modern handles or knobs

• Backsplash Upgrade: Install a timeless subway tile backsplash or a budget-friendly peel-and-stick option for a quick refresh

• Fixture and Appliance Refresh: Swap out old faucets, light fixtures, or even a dated range hood with sleek, modern alternatives

These updates can give your kitchen a whole new look without the hefty price tag. Also doing a thorough job cleaning, decluttering, and organizing can make your kitchen more appealing to potential buyers.

“Open the refrigerator, microwave oven, and cupboards, and make sure they are clean. People want to know a home was well taken care of,” said Amy Kruizenga, realtor at Vision Real Estate. “A house that is neat and clean, first and foremost, sells.”

Relaxing Retreats

Bathrooms are second only to kitchens in importance to buyers. Simple touches that are cheap and easy to make, only requiring a bit of elbow grease, and can create a clean, relaxing atmosphere.

Brighten up tile and bath room fixtures by cleaning or replacing caulk and existing grout lines. Replace your towel bars and install modern faucets and showerheads. Add a spa-like feel by replacing an old mirror with one framed in wood or metal. Replace dim lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting above the vanity. Creating a fresh, updated bathroom can make your home feel more luxurious without requiring a full remodel.

Say Goodbye to Carpets

Flooring has a major impact on how buyers perceive a home. Current buyers are drawn to durable, eco-friendly options like luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or engineered hardwood. These materials are affordable, stylish, and easy to maintain — ideal for busy families or pet owners.

If you’re dealing with worn-out carpets, consider replacing them in key living areas with updated flooring options. Even refinishing hardwood floors can provide an excellent ROI, making your home feel fresh, modern, and move-in ready.

Appeal to the Eco-Conscious Buyer

As sustainability continues to dominate conversations, energy efficiency is no longer a “nice-to-have” but a must-have for many buyers. Making your home greener can be as simple as sealing windows and doors to prevent drafts, upgrading to a smart thermostat, and replacing old lightblubs with energy-efficient LEDs.

For a bit more investment, consider adding attic insulation or upgrading to Energy Star-rated appliances. Not only will you attract environmentally conscious buyers, but you’ll also be able to highlight lower utility costs — an attractive feature for any homeowner.

Create Open and Functional Spaces

Buyers are looking for homes that feel spacious and versatile. If your home has small or awkward rooms, consider opening things up by removing non-load-bearing walls to create an open-concept living area. Rearrange furniture to maximize flow and natural light. Stage spaces like a home office or gym to demonstrate their potential. Even small changes, such as decluttering and removing oversized furniture, can transform a room and make it feel larger.

Illuminate the Possibilities

Never underestimate the power of paint and good lighting. A freshly painted, neutral-color can make any space feel larger, cleaner, and more inviting. Popular and versatile shades include warm whites, soft beiges, and gentle grays. These hues not only appeal to a broad audience but also allow buyers to envision their personal style in the home.

Bright, well-lit spaces feel more welcoming and spacious. Replace dim or outdated fixtures with modern designs and add smart bulbs or dimmers for versatility. Provide additional lighting in key areas like the kitchen, bathrooms, and living room to showcase your home.

Declutter, Clean, and Stage for Success

Perhaps the most cost-effective way to prepare your home for sale is to declutter, deep clean, and stage it to highlight its best features. Remove personal items, excess furniture, and anything that might distract from the home’s potential.

Hiring a professional stager can be an excellent investment, but do-it-yourself staging with carefully chosen furniture and decor can work just as well. Make each room feel functional, inviting, and ready for buyers to imagine themselves living there.

“Everyone runs out of time and has a list of projects that they want to get done before putting their home on the market,” said Kruizenga. “By contacting a real estate agent early in the process, you can make better decisions about where your effort and money will make the most sense.”

What Buyers Want

This year, buyers are looking for homes that feel modern yet timeless, eco-friendly, and adaptable to a range of lifestyles. Showcasing spaces that are functional, energy-efficient, and move-in ready is key to making a strong impression. Having a friend who can give you an honest opinion of repairs that need to be done and working with a real estate agent early in your process can help you decide where to focus your time and attention.

Selling your home in 2026 doesn’t have to mean pouring thousands of dollars into renovations. By focusing on strategic, cost-effective updates, you can create a home that buyers will fall in love with while maximizing your ROI. With a little effort and a clear plan, your home will stand out in the competitive market and have buyers lining up to make an offer.

Lower your energy bills and make your home more eco-friendly with these valuable rebates and programs.
By: Teresa Miller

With energy prices climbing and the effects of climate change becoming more apparent, it’s more important than ever for homeowners to find ways to save on their energy bills while reducing their environmental footprint. Thankfully, there are several energy rebate programs available to homeowners in Michigan that can help you make your home more energy-efficient without breaking the bank. Through a variety of rebates offered by utility companies, as well as state and federal programs, you can upgrade your home, reduce your environmental impact, and lower your monthly costs.

REBATES FROM CONSUMERS ENERGY

When upgrading an existing home or building a more energy-conscious home, the rebates from Consumers Energy can significantly lower the initial expense of switching to a more efficient HVAC system and appliances.

Appliance Rebates

Thinking about replacing an old appliance? You can earn rebates by choosing ENERGY STAR® certified appliances, including refrigerators, clothes washers, and dishwashers. These appliances are designed to use less energy, which means you’ll save both on the initial cost through the rebate and over time with lower utility bills.

HVAC Rebates for Heating and Cooling Upgrades

If you’re looking to upgrade your heating and cooling system, now might be the perfect time. Consumers Energy offers rebates for energy-efficient furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps. Upgrading to these high-efficiency systems can make a noticeable difference in both comfort and energy savings.

Insulation and Window Rebates

Poor insulation or old windows can lead to high heating and cooling costs. Consumers Energy offers rebates for upgrading insulation and installing energy-efficient windows, which can help maintain a more consistent indoor temperature and reduce energy usage.

Smart Thermostat Rebates

For a relatively simple and effective upgrade, consider installing a smart thermostat. Consumers Energy offers rebates for these devices, which allow you to control your home’s heating and cooling more efficiently, even when you’re not home.

Water Heaters

High efficiency water heaters are designed to use less energy while still providing reliable hot water for your home. Whether you’re upgrading to a tankless model or an ENERGY STAR® certified conventional unit, Consumers Energy’s rebates make it more affordable to switch to a system that can reduce your energy consumption and lower your utility bills.

“A typical rebate from Consumers Energy is $100 to $200; rebates are tiered depending on the efficiency of your installation,” said Pam Austin of Austin Heating & Cooling in Dimondale, Michigan. “Customers should know that approximately six weeks after we submit an application for our clients, a paper check will be mailed to the person listed on the account with Consumers Energy.”

According to Austin, there are other rebate programs available through DTE, HomeWorks Tri-County, Lansing BWL, and the Michigan Propane Commission. However, most homeowners in Michigan are Consumer Energy customers. Also rebates only apply to new construction if it is a whole-home project. You should work with your builder to get all the details on the potential rebates for a new home.

STATE OF MICHIGAN FINANCING

Michigan Saves

If you’re planning larger energy-saving projects, Michigan Saves could be a great resource. This nonprofit program offers low-interest financing for energy-efficient home improvements. From adding insulation to installing solar panels, Michigan Saves makes it easier for homeowners to tackle energy-efficient upgrades.

Unlike some traditional loans, Michigan Saves financing doesn’t require you to use your home equity as collateral. This makes the program accessible to more homeowners, including those who might not qualify for other types of financing. Michigan Saves works with a network of approved contractors who specialize in energy-efficient projects and meet the standards required to offer Michigan Saves financing.

Michigan Propane Commission

Established to promote propane use and safety, the Michigan Propane Commission (MPC) supports energy-saving initiatives across Michigan. Their rebate programs aim to make propane a more affordable and eco-friendly option for heating and other household needs, helping residents transition to cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.

The MPC rebates are available to homeowners for installing high-efficiency propane appliances like furnaces and water heaters, as well as for adding or replacing propane storage tanks. By taking advantage of these incentives, homeowners can lower their energy costs and enhance the comfort and efficiency of their homes.

FEDERAL REBATES AND TAX INCENTIVES

Federal Rebates Through the Inflation Reduction Act

Michigan homeowners can also benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act, which offers federal rebates for a range of energy-efficient home improvements. These rebates cover projects like installing high-efficiency electric appliances, heat pumps, and whole-house energy upgrades. It’s a great option if you’re considering significant energy-saving investments.

Are Federal Rebates Tax Write-Offs?

While federal rebates help reduce the cost of energy-efficient upgrades, they are not tax write-offs. These rebates are direct incentives that reduce the upfront cost of energy-efficient installations.

However, there are federal tax credits, like the Residential Clean Energy Credit, that allow you to claim a percentage of the costs for certain energy-saving improvements, such as solar panel installations. These tax credits can be applied when filing your taxes to directly reduce your tax bill. Combining rebates and tax credits can result in significant savings for homeowners making energy-efficient upgrades. It’s always a good idea to consult a tax professional or review IRS guidelines to ensure you’re taking advantage of any relevant credits or deductions.

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH ENERGY REBATES

Many HVAC, window, insulation, and solar contractors will handle the rebate application process for you as part of their service. Be sure to ask your contractor if they can assist with applying for any available rebates.

“We provide information about any potential rebates with our estimates,” said Austin. “Since it can be confusing for homeowners, we will fill out the application and provide all of the necessary documentation for rebates on behalf of our customers.”

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer or you want to explore your options, follow the instructions provided for eligibility and application steps. Each program may have different application processes.

Step 1 Check Out Available Rebates: Look into the rebates offered by Consumers Energy and other programs to find out which ones apply to your planned home upgrades.

Step 2 Purchase and Install the Products: Buy the energy-efficient products and have them installed.

Step 3 Submit Your Application: Complete the application process with the necessary documentation, including receipts and proof of installation.

Step 4 Receive Your Rebate: Once approved, you’ll receive your rebate as a check or credit on your energy bill.

MAXIMIZE YOUR HOME’S EFFICIENCY AND SAVINGS

Michigan homeowners have excellent opportunities to make their homes more energy-efficient and save money through a variety of rebate programs. Whether you’re upgrading appliances, improving insulation, or installing a smart thermostat, these programs make it easier and more affordable to invest in energy-saving improvements. Talk with your contractors and visit program websites (see the article in the sidebar on the previous page) to learn more and get started today!

The Golden Fields: Canola Production in Mid-Michigan

An Advantageous Crop

Did you see the beautiful yellow fields in the Mason area this spring and wonder what was growing? The answer is canola or rapeseed, which is often considered the golden crop due to its vibrant yellow flowers and valuable oil content. It is an increasingly popular commodity in the agricultural landscape of Mid-Michigan, including Mason. While canola is primarily associated with Canada, its production in Michigan has been steadily growing.

Growing Interest in Canola

Canola is a type of rapeseed, which is a brassica similar to mustard. It was developed in Canada through traditional plant breeding in the 1970s. In fact, the word canola is derived from “Canadian oil” and it was bred to have lower levels of erucic acid and glucosinolates than conventional rapeseed, making it more palatable for human consumption and more versatile in its applications.

Canola’s development not only improved its suitability for consumption, but also enhanced its nutritional profile. The oil extracted from canola is known for its heart-healthy properties, being low in saturated fats and high in omega-3 fatty acids. This makes it a staple in many American kitchens and a key ingredient in processed foods.

“Canola is processed into canola oil and canola meal,” said Tyler Abel, an Account Manager with ADM. “Canola seed has 45% oil content and is the third most consumed oil after palm and soybean oil. Canola meal is high in protein and used in feed for cattle, swine, and poultry, as well as aquaculture.”

This dual purpose of canola, providing both nutritious oil and high-protein meal, makes it similar in value to corn and soybeans. While Michigan is not traditionally known for canola production, there is a growing interest in the crop among the state’s farmers. The unique climate and soil conditions in Michigan offer a promising environment for canola production.

“The economics allow canola to compete for acreage with other row crops,” said Abel. “And, the climate in Michigan provides a strong yield potential.”

Benefits of Growing Canola

As interest in canola continues to grow, Michigan’s agricultural sector stands to benefit from diversifying its crop portfolio. Farmers appreciate canola’s relatively low input costs and the advantages it provides in crop rotation, improving soil health and breaking pest and disease cycles.

A resource for farmers looking for more information, Michigan State University (MSU) has been researching canola and its extension services help growers adopt best practices for canola production. MSU’s initiatives include conducting field trials to determine the best varieties for the region and offering guidance on pest management, disease prevention, and sustainable farming techniques.

“Canola in Michigan is worked into the corn and soybean rotation,” said Madelyn Celovsky, Conservation Agronomist Educator with Jackson County MSU Extension. “Adding a crop to the rotation means there is a longer time period between crops and more crop diversity is a good tool to have in the toolbox to manage pests and disease.”

Since canola is a brassica, whereas corn and wheat are grasses and soybeans are legumes, farmers who add canola to their rotation have fewer problems with parasitic nematodes, weeds, insects, and diseases. With its deep root structure, canola not only reduces the chance of erosion, but also improves soil structure for subsequent crops.

“Canola is planted after soybeans in the early fall and harvested in July,” said Celovsky. “While it can be no-tilled, even when it isn’t, canola provides ground cover for fields in winter to help prevent soil erosion.”

Besides lending itself to sustainable farming practices, canola also provides economic benefits. It provides cash flow in the early summer, before wheat and other crops are harvested. Also, adding canola can help to balance fluctuating crop production or market prices in any given year.

“A farm is more resilient when they spread their risk across different crops,” said Celovsky. “For example, if it is a bad wheat year, it may be a good canola year.”

Expanding Canola’s Horizons

Currently, there are a few thousand acres of canola in production in Ingham, Livingston and Shiawassee counties. With the economic and sustainability benefits of growing canola, the golden fields of canola in our area are likely to expand due to increasing support from both MSU and agribusinesses like ADM.

“ADM in Webberville started handling canola in 2021 and ships canola to Windsor, Canada for processing,” said Abel. “Our location in Webberville is a drop-off point, providing a market for canola that producers wouldn’t have elsewhere.”

This initiative by ADM has significantly contributed to the growing interest in canola cultivation in Mid-Michigan, as it opens up new opportunities for local farmers. For growers looking to get started with canola, every spring ADM offers an informational meeting and sells Rubisco canola seed. These meetings are designed to educate and support farmers, ensuring they have the knowledge and resources needed to successfully cultivate canola.

“Row crop growers can use their current equipment to plant and harvest canola,” said Abel. “If growers are interested in planting canola this year, they should get their seed orders in right away and can work with any account manager at ADM Webberville.”

The Future of Canola in Mid-Michigan

Due to a high demand for canola oil, both domestically and internationally, there is a steady market for canola producers. Farmers in Mid-Michigan are increasingly appreciating the multifaceted advantages of canola for its immediate economic benefits and for enhancing long-term soil health.

With ongoing research, support, and adoption of best practices, canola is poised to become a main-stay in the Mason area. As more farmers embrace this versatile crop, the fields of golden flowers may become an increasingly common sight, symbolizing a thriving and sustainable agricultural future.

Deciding on a career path is a significant decision, but if you’re inclined towards hands-on work that yields immediate, tangible results, the skilled trades are worth considering. These professions are not just jobs; they are critical roles that keep society running smoothly and offer personal fulfillment, financial stability, and numerous other benefits. Students in Ingham County may embark on a journey in pursuing a career in the skilled trades in a variety of programs available through Career and Technical Education (CTE).

Benefits of the Skilled Trades

Pursuing a career in the skilled trades can be a smart, rewarding decision. Skilled trades people are always in high demand due to the essential nature of their work, which includes construction, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and more. The persistent need for these skills means that job security in this sector tends to be robust.

Variety, a sense of accomplishment, and financial considerations contribute to high job satisfaction in many of the skilled trades. Working in a trade often means no two days are the same. The work can involve different locations, varied projects, and unique challenges, which keeps the workday interesting and dynamic. There is a unique satisfaction that comes from crafting or repairing something with your own hands. Additionally, skilled trade jobs often offer competitive salaries that are comparable to or even exceed those of jobs requiring a four-year college degree.

“Michigan’s employers are seeking to fill skilled trades positions more than ever before,” said Jamie Engel, Executive Director for Career & Technical Education at Ingham Intermediate School District. “The shortage of trained workers in fields such as manufacturing, construction and automotive is expected to continue through 2030. Students who take advantage of Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs, such as those offered at the Wilson Talent Center in Mason, can leave high school work-ready, often with on-the-job training through work-based learning experiences or apprenticeship opportunities.”

Other financial advantages for skilled trades people include the opportunity to work overtime and the opportunity for advancement. Skilled trades people can advance in their careers by increasing levels of certification and specialization, by moving into management and supervisory roles, or by going into business for themselves.

Spotlight on the Skilled Trades

For those who prefer active, engaging work environments over desk jobs, skilled trades provide the opportunity to work with their hands, solve practical problems, and see tangible results. Here are just a few of the fields available in the skilled trades:

Electrician: Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power systems in homes, businesses, and factories, ensuring that electricity is safely and efficiently brought to every device that needs it.

Plumber: Plumbers install and repair pipes and fixtures that carry water, gas, or other fluids in residential and commercial settings. They are critical in designing systems that effectively manage water and waste.

Carpenter: Carpenters construct and repair structures, buildings, and homes. Some work as builders, others as remodelers, or they may also build custom furniture and cabinetry.

HVAC Technician: HVAC technicians work on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings. Some work in commercial buildings and others service or install equipment in homes.

Welder: Welders use equipment to join metal parts, fixing and fabricating metal structures, tools, and vehicles across a variety of industries. Welding requires a steady hand and precise attention to detail.

Heavy Equipment Operator/Mechanic: Heavy equipment operators work with large machinery and vehicles used in construction, mining, agriculture, and other industries. They also need to know how to maintain, and repair heavy equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and loaders.

Automotive Technician/Mechanic: Automotive technicians diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicles. They work on engines, transmissions, brakes, and other mechanical and electrical systems.

Empowering Students to Build a Bright Future

From electricians wiring up our world to plumbers ensuring our water runs smoothly, skilled tradespeople are the backbone of our infrastructure. But how does one get started in this fulfilling line of work? High school CTE programs serve as a launching pad, providing students with the practical skills, industry connections, and career readiness needed to thrive in the trades.

CTE programs provide students with hands-on experience and exposure to various occupations, helping them discover their passions and strengths. Juniors and Seniors at Leslie or Mason High School who are interested in the skilled trades attend high school for a half day. Then they attend a skilled trades CTE program for a half day at the Wilson Talent Center in the construction trades, welding technology, automotive technology, engineering technologies, or precision machining technology. The Wilson Talent Center also offers CTE programs in a variety of other fields including health care, cosmetology, criminal justice, and culinary arts.

“In addition to the work-based learning experiences that allow students to see first-hand what the world of work will look like, CTE students have the opportunity to earn state and national industry certifications, making them a more valuable employee,” said Engel. We hear regularly from students that they ‘learn best by doing’ and that’s what these programs allow them to do – learn in a hands-on environment.”

From using tools to mastering technical knowledge, students gain practical skills directly applicable to the workforce. Through the Wilson Talent Center’s partnerships with local businesses and professionals, these programs offer networking opportunities and real-world insights. Each program helps to prepare students for immediate employment and further education. Some offer industry-recognized certifications.

Transitioning from Classroom to Career

With a solid foundation from CTE programs, students seamlessly transition into the workforce or pursue advanced training. Armed with practical skills, industry connections, and a clear career path, they can enter careers in the skilled trades, shaping the world around them one project at a time.

Choosing a career in the skilled trades isn’t just about finding a job—it’s about pursuing an occupation that offers stability, satisfaction, and meaningful impact. High school CTE programs serve as the first step on this journey, empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and connections needed to succeed in the workforce. Whether you’re wiring circuits, welding metal, or building structures, the world of skilled trades awaits—ready to welcome you into its ranks.
